Validate Product Idea
Turn uncertainty into a falsifiable validation plan before recommending expensive implementation.
Workflow
- Read
docs/product/brief.md,docs/product/audience.md,docs/product/positioning.md,docs/product/competitors.md, anddocs/product/metrics.mdwhen present. - Write the hypothesis as segment + painful situation + proposed outcome + expected behavior.
- Separate evidence into observed, reported, behavioral, and assumed.
- Identify the riskiest assumption across desirability, viability, feasibility, distribution, and trust.
- Choose the cheapest test that can change the decision: interviews, concierge workflow, prototype, landing page, waitlist, price test, usage analysis, or limited release.
- Define pass, fail, and inconclusive thresholds before running the test.
- Recommend build, revise, pause, or reject. State confidence and missing evidence.
- Update the relevant product-context files and log material decisions.
Use references/validation-scorecard.md for the assessment format.
Guardrails
- Do not present search volume, competitor traction, or customer demand as known without a source.
- Treat compliments and survey intent as weak evidence.
- Prefer observed behavior, payment, repeated usage, and switching effort.
