Positioning Wedge

Turn market research into a defensible wedge buyers understand. Requires competitor context from market-research or competitor-landscape.

April Dunford checklist

Answer in order:

  1. Competitive alternatives — what would customers do if you did not exist? (Include non-SaaS workarounds.)
  2. Unique attributes — what do you have that alternatives lack?
  3. Value — what benefit do those attributes enable?
  4. Target customers — who cares most (subset of ICP)?
  5. Market category — what frame makes your value obvious?
  6. Trend — why now? (Link to market memo Why now.)

Wedge statement

One sentence: [Segment] struggling with [job] choose us over [alternative] because [proof] — unlike [incumbent weakness].

Messaging implications

  • Headline angle (not final copy)
  • 3 proof points grounded in evidence URLs or quotes
  • What not to claim (unsupported)

Kill / pivot cues

  • Wedge requires educating a category that does not exist and buyers do not search
  • Same promise as incumbent with no proof of 10× on one dimension that matters
