Maps direct, indirect, and substitute competitors, mines reviews for gaps, optional battle cards, and sets competitive kill criteria for software ideas. Use when the user asks about competitors, alternatives, positioning, whitespace, or differentiation.

Competitor Landscape

Use when market-research summary matrix is not enough — full positioning → positioning-wedge skill.

Checklist

  • List direct, indirect, and substitute solutions
  • Capture pricing, audience, and core promise for each competitor
  • Mine reviews and forums for recurring complaints
  • Map whitespace and positioning options
  • Optional: one-page battle card per top 2–3 competitors
  • Record competitive kill criteria

Interpretation

  • Competition usually validates demand.
  • No competitors can mean an unserved niche or a market that will not pay.
  • Kill when a dominant incumbent blocks entry or the market is hyper-competitive without a wedge.
