User Retention Patterns
Habit Loop Design
The Loop
Trigger → Action → Variable Reward → Investment
- Trigger: External (notification, email) or internal (boredom, curiosity).
- Action: The simplest behavior in anticipation of reward (open app, scroll).
- Variable Reward: Unpredictable content (social feed), progress (streaks), social validation (likes).
- Investment: User puts something in that improves the next experience (data, content, connections).
Retention Patterns
- Streaks: Daily usage streaks with visual progress.
- Notifications: Re-engagement at optimal times (not spam).
- Personalization: Product improves with use.
- Social hooks: Activity from connections pulls users back.
- Progress systems: Levels, badges, completion percentages.
Churn Prevention
- Identify at-risk users (decreased frequency, incomplete tasks).
- Targeted re-engagement (email with specific value, not generic "we miss you").
- Exit survey: why are you leaving? (Don't make cancellation hard — make staying attractive).
- Win-back: offer or feature update after 30-60 days.
