Analytics for Designers
What to Track
| Question | Metric | Tool |
|---|---|---|
| Do users find X? | Click-through rate to X | Product analytics |
| Can users complete Y? | Task completion rate | Funnel analysis |
| Where do users struggle? | Drop-off points | Funnel analysis |
| How do users navigate? | Flow analysis | Path analysis |
| What do users ignore? | Feature adoption rate | Usage analytics |
| Is the new design better? | A/B test results | Experimentation platform |
Design Decisions from Data
- High bounce rate on page → Redesign above-fold content
- Users clicking non-interactive elements → Make them interactive or change visual treatment
- Low feature adoption → Improve discoverability or question the feature's value
- Long form completion time → Simplify the form
- Users rage-clicking → Something is broken or confusing
Qualitative + Quantitative
- Analytics tells you WHAT users do
- Research tells you WHY users do it
- Use both. Never just one.
