Print Design For Digital

What Translates

  • Grid systems — print grids work digitally with responsive adaptation.
  • Typographic hierarchy — same principles, different execution.
  • White space — equally powerful on screen.
  • Visual rhythm — alternating density creates interest.

What Doesn't

  • Fixed dimensions — screens aren't fixed. Design for flow.
  • CMYK color — convert to RGB/HEX. Colors will shift.
  • Columns of text — multi-column body text doesn't work on mobile.
  • Bleed and trim — no physical edges on screen.

Adapting Print Techniques

  • Pull quotes: Work as full-width interruptions in scroll.
  • Drop caps: Work on desktop, simplify for mobile.
  • Caption placement: Consider responsive reflow.
  • Photo essays: Translate to scroll-based storytelling.
  • Spreads: Translate to full-viewport sections.
