Pricing Strategy Design
Model Types
| Model | Best For | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Flat rate | Simple products, clear value | Basecamp |
| Tiered | Feature differentiation | Slack, Notion |
| Per-seat | Team products | GitHub, Figma |
| Usage-based | Variable consumption | AWS, Twilio |
| Freemium | Network effects, viral growth | Spotify, Dropbox |
| Hybrid | Complex products | Salesforce |
Psychology
- Anchor high: Show expensive plan first
- Charm pricing: $9.99 vs $10 (works for B2C, not B2B)
- Annual discount: Show monthly cost + 'save 20%' for annual
- Decoy effect: Middle plan is the best value by design
- Loss aversion: 'You'll lose access to...' on downgrade
Design Rules
- 3 tiers maximum for most products
- Highlight the recommended plan visually
- Free tier: generous enough to be useful, limited enough to drive upgrade
- Enterprise: 'Contact sales' with key differentiators listed
- Show total annual cost AND monthly equivalent
