Used Vehicle Compliance Verification at Purchase

A used vehicle should be inspected and verified compliant before integrating into the fleet. Hidden issues become carrier liability immediately.

Pre-purchase inspection

Annual DOT inspection on file (within 12 months)
Recent service records
Title clean (no salvage, no flood)
Mileage verification
Inspection report from independent mechanic

Documents to obtain

Annual inspection certificate
Service history (oil changes, brake work, major repairs)
Title (clean)
VIN check (CARFAX or equivalent for commercial vehicles)
Prior carrier's DOT number history (to check for major incidents)

Hidden issues to look for

Frame damage hidden by paint
Engine block welding or shoddy repairs
Brake friction surface excessive wear
Tire age (DOT date code) regardless of tread
Suspension wear (especially leaf springs)
Wheel-end leaks not addressed
Lighting fixtures recently swapped

Post-purchase actions

Full DOT inspection by your mechanic
Brake adjustment check
Tire age verification (consider re-tiring soon)
Maintenance file setup (start fresh with PM schedule)
Lighting + reflector verification
ELD installation (if needed)
