Tractor Spec Options
Tractor spec choices made at purchase drive 5–7 years of operating cost. A bad spec costs ~$15K over the trade cycle. A good spec recovers more residual at trade.
Engine choice
Three major heavy-duty diesel platforms:

For most line-haul: 425–500 hp paired with 1,650 lb-ft torque is plenty. Higher hp burns more fuel and rarely needed unless heavy-haul or steep grades.
Aftermarket / parts availability: X15 wins for owner-operators who may end up far from home — every truck stop and dealer carries common parts.

The case for AMT (now ~85% of new tractors):
- New drivers don't have manual transmission CDL endorsement (restriction L)
- AMT shifts more efficiently in heavy traffic / mountainous terrain
- Fewer clutch warranty claims
- Fuel economy advantage 0.2–0.4 MPG over manual driven by average driver
Axle ratio
Rear axle ratio determines RPM at cruise speed. Lower ratio = lower RPM = better fuel economy.

Lower ratios are "fast" axles for fuel economy; higher ratios are "slow" axles for pulling power. Match to lane:
- Flat Midwest line-haul: 2.47–2.64
- Mountain (CO, PA, WV): 2.79–3.08
- Heavy haul / vocational: 3.08–3.55

Sleeper size affects driver recruiting — modern solo OTR drivers expect 72"+ mid-roof minimum with refrigerator, microwave, inverter, and APU. Skimping costs in driver retention.

- Lower miles (under 500K)
- Documented maintenance history
Resale discounts ($5K–$15K):

- Niche engine (International A26 weak in some markets)
- Bright / custom paint
- 700K+ miles

Aftertreatment failures are the most expensive non-warranty repair ($3K–$8K). Extended aftertreatment warranty is the best ROI of any extension.
Common mistakes
- Spec'ing too much horsepower because driver wants it — fuel economy penalty
- Wrong axle ratio for the lane — costs 0.5 MPG forever
- Tiny sleeper to save $10K — costs $30K in driver turnover
- Buying a "value" engine outside the X15/DD15/MX-13 trio — parts headaches on the road
- Skipping driver-facing camera — insurance premium 10–20% higher
- Custom paint to "personalize the fleet" — kills resale
- Manual transmission today — no new drivers can run it
