Seasonal Operations — Winter and Summer
Trucking operations swing significantly between summer and winter — equipment behavior, regulatory requirements, freight demand, and driver risk profile all shift. Carriers that operate well in both seasons capture margin year-round.
Winter operations
Chain laws
Snow chains (or "alternate traction devices" like AutoSocks in some states) become mandatory when conditions deteriorate. Major chain states:

Chain violation fines: $500–$1,500. Chain accidents (under-chaining) can trigger CSA Vehicle Maintenance BASIC violations.
Anti-gel fuel additive
Diesel begins gelling at ~15°F. Untreated fuel becomes paste, stalls the engine, blocks injectors. Fixes:
- Use winter-blend diesel (truck stops switch to winter blend Oct–Apr in cold states)
- Add anti-gel additive (Power Service, Howes, Stanadyne) when temps drop below 20°F
- Park indoors or with block heater overnight when temps below 0°F
A gelled truck is a 4–8 hour service call ($500+). Anti-gel is $5/treatment — ROI is obvious.
Battery and starting
Cold weather kills 30–50% of battery cranking amps at 0°F. Pre-winter battery testing is standard maintenance. Engine block heaters: standard equipment in northern fleets.
Tire chains preparation

Driver should practice chaining before first storm. A driver who's never chained in real conditions will struggle when it matters.
Idle policy adjustments
Most fleets relax anti-idle rules below 20°F for cab heating. APU operation requires APU fuel reserve.
Brake performance
Air brakes work well in cold but moisture in lines freezes. Air dryers + tank drainage critical in winter.
Routing changes
Avoid mountain passes when storms forecasted. Many carriers reroute I-80 (Sierra) and I-70 (Vail Pass) when posted chain requirements appear. Cost ~10–15% more miles but eliminates chain-up time and crash risk.
Spring thaw weight restrictions ("frost laws")
In Northern states (MI, MN, WI, MN, ND, SD, ID, MT), weight limits on secondary roads drop by 25–50% during spring thaw (~March 1 – June 1 depending on state). Reasons: subgrade weakens.
States post specific roads/dates. MI and MN have the broadest restrictions. Overweight tickets during frost-law season are $500–$2,000.
Summer operations
Heat-related tire failures
Heat is the #1 cause of summer tire blowouts. Drivers should:
- Check tire pressure cold (not hot) — pressure rises 1 psi per 10°F
- Reduce speed in extreme heat (>95°F ambient)
- Watch trailer tires (most-neglected position) — heat damages first
Trailer tire blowouts during summer peak season cause 30–40% of mid-trip breakdowns.
Brake fade
Long descents (mountain grades, sustained 6%+) in hot conditions cause brake fade. Driver training: use engine brake (Jake), downshift, never ride foot brake.
Cab cooling and driver heat illness
OSHA flags driver heat illness as growing risk. Solutions:
- APU air conditioning (sleeper)
- Battery HVAC during loading delays
- Cooling vests / ice towels in flatbed / hazmat (limited cab time)
- Hydration policy in driver handbook
Construction / detour season
Most road construction May–October. Adds:
- Slower transit times
- Detour weight restrictions (low bridges, tight turns)
- Lane closures on major corridors
GPS-enabled routing software adjusts in real-time. Carrier saves $20–$100 per load by avoiding stuck-in-construction.
Hurricane season (June 1 – Nov 30)
Carriers along Gulf and East coasts:
- Pre-stage equipment outside hurricane path
- Emergency declarations expand HOS exemptions (49 CFR 390.23)
- Freight rates spike for FEMA / emergency loads ($5–$8/mile)
- Insurance moratoriums (no new policies during named storm)

Rates peak ~mid-July (produce + back-to-school) and again ~mid-November (peak retail).
Common mistakes
- No anti-gel in fuel during cold snap → gelled truck, days of downtime
- Skipping pre-winter battery test → cold-morning no-start
- Driver carrying old / wrong-size chains they can't actually install
- Running summer freight rates and forgetting Q1 slump → cash flow crisis January–February
- Not adjusting tire pressure between seasons → temperature-driven inflation drift
- Routing through mountain passes during winter storms → multi-day delay or wreck
- Operating overweight on frost-law roads → fines plus reputation damage
