Log Hauling Operations
Log hauling is a specialty operation primarily in forested regions (Pacific Northwest, Southeast, Northeast, Canada). It has specific cargo securement rules + state-level permit overlays.
Federal log securement (49 CFR 393.116-118)
Logs are governed by special cargo securement rules:
Bunks + stakes
Logs typically loaded between bunks (cross supports on the trailer) + secured with stakes (vertical posts on each side):
- Bunks must be securely attached to vehicle
- Stakes must extend at least 6 inches above the topmost log
- Stakes must be made of suitable strength (steel typically)
- Bunk + stake combination must withstand acceleration: 0.8g forward, 0.5g lateral, 0.5g rearward, 0.2g downward
Tiedowns
- One tiedown over each "course" of logs
- Tiedowns must be tightened to manufacturer-specified working load limit
- Logs on a single-stack load require additional tiedowns
Length-based rules
- Logs ≤ 10 feet long: 1 stake on each side
- Logs > 10 feet long: stakes positioned every 8-10 feet
State logging permits
Major logging states have specific permit programs:

These typically allow operation at higher axle weights than standard (logs often over federal 80K lb limits with permit).
Short-haul exemption for logging
Per 49 CFR 395.1(e)(1), short-haul drivers operating within 150 air miles are exempt from full HOS + ELD requirements. Logging operations typically qualify:
- Within forest area + mill area = often within 150 air miles
- Bobtail home + load from forest = within 150 air miles
- Therefore: many logging drivers run on short-haul (paper logs only)
But: cross-state logging operations exceed 150 miles → full HOS + ELD applies.
Driver requirements
- Standard CDL (Class A for tractor-trailer)
- DOT medical certificate
- Some states require logging-specific training (Oregon SAIF, Washington L&I, etc.)
- Some states require log loading certification (especially for self-loading trucks)
Load configurations
- Tractor + log trailer — most common; 4-6 logs in a load
- Self-loader (Stinger Steer) — truck with onboard hydraulic loader; often used in remote areas
- Pole logger / Pole truck — for hauling very long timber poles
- Mountain Logger / Steep Slope — heavy-duty trucks for mountainous terrain
Common log hauling mistakes
- Insufficient stake length — stakes don't extend 6" above top log. Roadside OOS.
- Inadequate tiedowns — only 1 binder when 2+ required.
- Operating over permitted weight without state log permit.
- No bunk-and-stake gauges to verify load weight.
- Drivers underestimating short-haul radius + falling into full HOS rules.
- Logging operations crossing state lines without each state's permit.
- Equipment failure on steep slopes — rare but catastrophic.
Tare weight vs gross weight in logging
Log trucks typically operate at very high weights:
- Empty tractor + log trailer: ~22,000-30,000 lb
- Loaded weight: 80,000-105,000 lb (with permit)
- Cargo weight: 50,000-75,000 lb of logs
Operators benefit from accurate cargo weighing to avoid overweight citations.
Insurance for log hauling
Logging is higher-risk:
- Rolling logs hazard (cargo shift causing rollover)
- Steep slope operations
- Remote area operations (slower emergency response)
- Heavy load + uneven terrain
Insurance minimums often:
- $1M-$5M commercial auto liability
- $750K-$5M cargo coverage
- Specialized log hauling endorsement on policy
Hours of service flexibility
Logging operations often benefit from:
- 150-mile short-haul exemption (no ELD required)
- Agricultural exemption during state-declared forestry seasons (some states)
- State-specific log hauling exemptions (Oregon, Washington have specific carve-outs)
