Skill K95M65/AI_ONBOARD/skills/define-brand-foundation

Defines an evidence-based brand foundation covering audience, category, positioning, promise, differentiation, proof, personality, voice, visual principles, architecture, and governance. Use when creating or refreshing a product or organization brand, aligning teams before identity or website work, documenting durable brand context, or evaluating whether expression matches strategy.From its SKILL.md

  • 24 days oldThe repository was created 24 days ago. New is not bad, but a brand new repository carrying a familiar-sounding name is the shape a typosquat arrives in, and there has been no time for anyone else to find a problem with it.
  • 0 stars0 stars. Stars are a popularity signal and not a quality one, but at this level it is likely that nobody has read this closely except its author, and you would be relying on your own review.

Define a brand foundation

Create a durable source of truth that guides product, content, visual design, and marketing decisions. Do not substitute moodboards, taglines, or an arbitrary palette for strategy.

Gather evidence

  1. Read project instructions, strategy, research, product experience, current identity, customer language, market evidence, competitive context, analytics, sales and support material, and legal constraints.
  2. Separate verified facts, stakeholder aspirations, customer perceptions, and unresolved hypotheses.
  3. Identify audiences by need, behavior, context, and relationship to the offering—not demographics alone.
  4. Capture the language customers use for the problem, alternatives, value, objections, and proof.
  5. Inventory existing brand assets and equity before proposing change.

Never invent customer quotations, market leadership, awards, performance, certifications, partnerships, or other proof.

Use assets/brand-foundation-template.md as the durable artifact.

Define the strategic core

Make explicit:

  • Purpose: why the organization or product matters beyond its current output.
  • Audience: whose progress it serves and in which situations.
  • Category and frame: what people should compare it with.
  • Problem and tension: what prevents progress today.
  • Promise: the valuable change the brand can credibly commit to.
  • Differentiation: meaningful reason to choose it over relevant alternatives.
  • Proof: evidence supporting the promise.
  • Principles: boundaries that guide decisions and tradeoffs.

Write a positioning statement for internal clarity, not as public copy. Test whether it is specific, credible, defensible, relevant, and useful for choosing what not to do.

Use conduct-user-research when audience, perception, or customer language lacks credible evidence. Use shape-product-opportunity when the unresolved question is product direction rather than brand.

Define expression without overprescribing output

Read references/brand-decisions.md when defining voice, visual principles, architecture, or governance.

Verbal expression

Define personality traits as observable behaviors with counterbalances. Translate them into voice principles, vocabulary preferences, claims discipline, and contextual tone shifts. Include examples and anti-examples grounded in real product situations.

Visual expression

Define principles connecting form to strategy: typography character, color role, image behavior, shape, composition, motion, density, and use of product evidence. State what should remain consistent and where platform or audience context may adapt.

Do not select fonts, colors, logos, or imagery merely to fill the brief. Let downstream visual-design work produce and validate assets against these principles.

Brand architecture

Clarify relationships among organization, products, features, programs, communities, and partnerships. Define naming hierarchy, endorsement, and when a new name or sub-brand is justified.

Test coherence

Apply the proposed foundation to representative decisions:

  • product onboarding and a difficult error;
  • a marketing page and proof claim;
  • a sales or partnership message;
  • a visual composition;
  • a sensitive support or incident message;
  • a new feature or product name.

Revise principles that cannot guide a choice, conflict with evidence, or produce the same answer as every competitor.

Govern the foundation

Define owner, decision rights, approved sources of proof, review triggers, exception process, and version history. Record open hypotheses rather than freezing them as brand truth. Refresh the foundation when audience, category, product promise, business model, or observed perception materially changes.

Compose with downstream skills

  • Give design-product-content the audience, voice, terminology, and tone constraints.
  • Give design-and-build-website the positioning, message hierarchy, proof, and visual principles.
  • Give design-product-interface the product role, personality, visual principles, and platform adaptation boundaries.
  • Give evolve-design-system semantic brand roles rather than one-off values.

Finish with evidence

Report the foundation, evidence sources, disputed or low-confidence claims, decisions it changes, representative applications tested, governance, and remaining research or asset needs.
