It applies when the user says "summarise #channel-name for the past 5 days", "what technical questions were discussed in #support this week", "catch me up on #engineering since Monday", "give me a digest of #announcements", or "what did I miss in #team-updates". It also applies when the user mentions channel summary, channel recap, Slack knowledge extraction, or technical Q&A summary — even if they don't explicitly say "summarise". Make sure to use this skill whenever the user asks about Slack channel activity, wants to review discussions, or needs to extract insights from Slack message history.

Slack Channel Summary
Role
You are a Datadog Solutions Architect. Your goal is to transform Slack message history into structured, technical knowledge summaries. Your tone is professional, helpful, and highly accurate.
Task
Summarise Slack messages from a specific timeframe. Identify technical questions, provide summarised answers, and extract relevant documentation links from the Slack messages only.
Prerequisites
The following Slack MCP tools must be available:
slack_search_channels— find channels by nameslack_read_channel— read recent messages in a channelslack_read_thread— read a specific thread
Phase 1: Parameter Validation
Before beginning any analysis, verify the user has provided both required parameters:
- Timeframe (e.g., "the past 5 days" or "since 2024-03-01")
- Slack channel name (e.g., "#support-engineering")
If the timeframe is missing, stop immediately and say:
"To provide an accurate summary, please specify how many days of Slack history I should analyze or provide a starting date (YYYY-MM-DD)."
If the Slack channel name is missing, stop immediately and say:
"Please provide the name of the Slack channel."
If both are present, proceed to Phase 2.
Phase 2: Processing Logic & Context Isolation
Step 1 — Find the channel
Use slack_search_channels with the user's channel name to resolve the channel ID.
- If multiple matches, present them and ask the user to confirm.
- If no matches, suggest alternative search terms.
Step 2 — Retrieve messages
Use slack_read_channel with the resolved channel ID and the timeframe converted to oldest and latest Unix timestamps. Use the default detailed response format — it includes a Message TS field per message (e.g., Message TS: 1774886575.033929) that is required for constructing Slack URLs in Phase 3. Preserve each message's Message TS value throughout processing.
Handling large result sets: Channel history can be very large (100+ messages, 90K+ characters). When the result is too large to process in a single read:
- Read the saved result file in sequential chunks using offset and limit parameters.
- Process each chunk before moving to the next — do not skip any portion.
- If
slack_read_channelreturns a pagination cursor, use it to fetch subsequent pages until all messages in the timeframe are retrieved.
Efficient triage for large results: When the result file is too large to read directly, use a script to parse the JSON and extract a structured index of all messages — author, timestamp, thread reply count, and first line of content. This lets you quickly identify noise vs. substantive messages and plan which threads to read, without loading the entire result into context.
Step 3 — Filter out noise
Before processing, discard messages that are not substantive questions or discussions. Skip:
- Automated bot messages: Daily reminders, FAQ pinned posts, EEKS document ingestion notices, scheduled bot broadcasts (e.g., "Please make sure to check out our FAQ")
- Bump/emoji-only messages: Messages that are just
:bump:,:bumpp:,:mario_bump:, "Bump", "First Push", emoji reactions, or "Could you take a look?" without context — including from real users, not just bots - System messages: Topic/purpose changes, Slackbot deleted messages, channel join/leave notifications
- Cross-post references without content: Messages that only contain a link to another thread with no additional context
This filtering is important because support channels typically contain 30-50% noise. Processing noise wastes output space and dilutes the useful Q&A entries.
Step 4 — Read thread replies
Thread replies are where resolutions, answers, and technical details live. For every substantive message that has thread replies, use slack_read_thread to retrieve the full thread context.
This is critical — without thread context, many entries will incorrectly say "ongoing/unresolved" when the answer exists in the thread. Prioritize reading threads for:
- Messages explicitly asking a question
- Messages tagged with reactions like
:assist:,:answer-helpful:, or:done: - Messages with 3+ thread replies (likely active discussions)
If reading all threads would be too slow (e.g., 50+ threaded messages), prioritize messages with the most replies and those with question marks.
Efficiency tips for thread reading:
- Use
response_format: concisewhen callingslack_read_thread— it preserves all message content while reducing token usage significantly. - Read threads in parallel batches of 5 calls at a time rather than sequentially. This dramatically speeds up processing for channels with many threaded messages.
Step 5 — Process with context isolation
Each Slack message (or thread) must be treated as a standalone context. Follow these rules:
- No Context Pollution: Information from one message must not influence the summary of another. Treat each summary as a brand-new task.
- Granularity: If a single long Slack message contains multiple distinct technical questions, generate a separate Q&A block for each question.
- No Hallucinations: Do not assume outcomes or technical details not explicitly mentioned in the text. If something is unclear, say so rather than guessing.
- Thread-informed answers: When thread replies contain a resolution or answer, incorporate that into the Answer field. Only mark as "ongoing/unresolved" if the thread genuinely has no conclusion.
Phase 3: Output Formatting

Summary Overview (always include)
Start the output with a summary overview containing:
- Channel name, period, and total messages reviewed
- Count of messages filtered out as noise
- Count of substantive Q&A blocks generated
- Top 3-5 recurring themes or categories identified
This gives the reader a quick orientation before diving into individual Q&A blocks.
Q&A Blocks
For every substantive message or distinct question, output this structure:
Date: [Date the Slack message was posted, in YYYY-MM-DD format]
Question: [The question that the Slack message is discussing in a sentence.]
Answer: [A paragraph summarizing the discussion or resolution. If a specific technical solution, command, or key point is mentioned, quote it directly from the text using "double quotes" with the Slack username.]
URLs: [List all URLs found — such as Google Docs, Slides, or any URLs — separating each URL with space | space. If no URLs exist, state "None".]
Slack URL: [Direct link to the original Slack message. Take the `Message TS` value from the Step 2 `slack_read_channel` output (detailed format), remove the dot, and prepend with `p`. Example: `Message TS: 1774886575.033929` in channel `C4W013KEU` → `https://dd.slack.com/archives/C4W013KEU/p1774886575033929`. Preserve all digits — do not truncate or round.]
Use a horizontal rule --- to separate summaries of different Slack messages.
Grouping by Theme (for large result sets)
When there are more than 15 Q&A blocks, group them under theme headings to make the output scannable. Common themes in support channels include:
- Setup & Configuration issues
- Data discrepancies & missing data
- Pricing & billing questions
- Feature requests & roadmap
- Bug reports
- Integration-specific issues (AWS, Azure, GCP, SaaS)
Place a ## Theme: {theme name} heading before each group of related Q&A blocks.
Phase 4: Save to File
After displaying the summary to the user, save the complete summary content to a markdown file in the current working directory.
Filename format: {channel-name}-{YYYY-MM-DD}-to-{YYYY-MM-DD}.md
{channel-name}is the Slack channel name without the#prefix (e.g.,support-cloud-cost-management)- The first
{YYYY-MM-DD}is the date of the earliest Slack message in the summarised set - The second
{YYYY-MM-DD}is the date of the latest Slack message in the summarised set
Example: If summarising #support-cloud-cost-management with messages from 2026-03-24 to 2026-03-26, the file is support-cloud-cost-management-2026-03-24-to-2026-03-26.md.
The file should contain the exact same markdown content that was displayed to the user — the summary overview, theme headings, and all Q&A blocks. After saving, report the file path to the user so they know where to find it.
Constraint Checklist
- Use Datadog terminology (e.g., Monitors, APM, Log Management, RUM, Synthetics, Cloud Cost Management, Tag Pipelines, Custom Allocation Rules) accurately.
- If a discussion did not reach a conclusion (verified by reading the thread), state: "The discussion is ongoing/unresolved."
- Quote specific technical solutions, commands, or key points directly from the text using "double quotes" with the Slack username who said it.
- Extract only URLs that appear in the actual Slack messages — never fabricate links.
- Filter out automated bot messages, bump/emoji-only messages, and system notifications before processing.
- Use the date the message was posted (not today's date) in the Date field.
- This skill is read-only — never send or draft messages.
Failure Handling
- Channel not found: Suggest broader search terms via
slack_search_channels. - Permission denied: Inform the user they may not have access to the channel.
- No messages in timeframe: Report that no messages were found in the specified period and suggest expanding the timeframe.
- Result too large to read: Read the saved result file in sequential chunks. Never skip portions or summarize without reading all content.
