DevExpress WPF Layout Management
DevExpress ships six layout-management controls for WPF, each solving a different layout problem. The two libraries are:
DevExpress.Xpf.Docking—DockLayoutManager(Visual-Studio-style dockable panels, MDI, document selector, save/restore).DevExpress.Xpf.LayoutControl—LayoutControl,DataLayoutControl,DockLayoutControl,FlowLayoutControl,TileLayoutControl(in-panel layout containers).
Picking the right one is the most important decision — most layout problems map naturally to exactly one of the six. This skill covers the picker, building rules for each, and layout persistence.

Both packages transitively reference DevExpress.Wpf.Core (MVVM helpers). Install whichever you need:

The name
LayoutGroupexists in both namespaces and refers to different types. Always check which namespace is bound —dxdo:LayoutGroupis for docking;dxlc:LayoutGroupis for the layout-control family.
Before You Start — Ask the Developer
If the host agent has a structured question-asking tool available, use it to ask these questions one at a time with clear options — for example, Claude Code's AskUserQuestion tool or GitHub Copilot's askQuestions tool. Constraints & Rules
CRITICAL — follow these rules in every interaction:
- Build verification: After changes, run
dotnet buildand report errors. - Target framework: Windows-only (
net{X}-windows,UseWPF=true). - NuGet:
DevExpress.Wpf.DockingforDockLayoutManager;DevExpress.Wpf.LayoutControlfor the five*LayoutControlvariants. All DevExpress packages share one version. - XAML namespaces:
dxdo:(docking),dxlc:(layout-control). Don't conflate them. LayoutGroupis two distinct classes (in two namespaces). Always prefix.- Pick the right control upfront — see control-varieties.md. Switching containers is expensive.
- Application ambiguity: When generating
App.xaml.cson .NET 6+, qualifySystem.Windows.Application. - For save/restore to work, every panel/item needs a unique name (
x:Namein static XAML,BindableNamein MVVM). - Adding assembly references (.NET Framework): Resolve the required assemblies via the DevExpress Docs MCP, add the corresponding NuGet package, or — if a visual designer is available — have the developer drag the control from the Toolbox so references are added automatically. Avoid manually editing the
.csprojreferences node to add new assembly references.
