DevExpress WinForms Scheduler Control

DevExpress.XtraScheduler.SchedulerControl is a full-featured scheduling and calendar control for WinForms. It supports multiple interchangeable views (Day, Work Week, Month, Timeline, Gantt, Agenda, Year), rich appointment data items with recurrence and reminders, resource-based grouping, and extensible appearance customization. It is designed for scenarios ranging from simple personal calendars to complex multi-resource booking systems.

The control is backed by a SchedulerDataStorage instance which manages the Appointments and Resources collections. In bound mode these collections are synchronized to a data source via field mappings. In unbound mode appointments and resources are created directly in code.

When to Use This Skill

  • Create a calendar or scheduling UI for end users (Day/Week/Month planner, timeline, or Gantt chart).
  • Bind the scheduler to a database via a DataSet or BindingSource with field mappings.
  • Add appointments in code (simple, all-day, recurring series).
  • Configure recurrence rules (daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, hourly, minutely).

Prerequisites & Installation

NuGet Package

DevExpress.Win.Scheduler

Install via the NuGet Package Manager or the DevExpress Unified Component Installer. The package pulls in DevExpress.XtraScheduler.v26.1.dll and related assemblies.

Host Form Requirements

The SchedulerControl works in a plain Form, but use DevExpress.XtraEditors.XtraForm (or DevExpress.XtraBars.Ribbon.RibbonForm when hosting a RibbonControl) for consistent skin integration and to unlock the smart-tag "Create Ribbon" command.

Before You Start — Ask the Developer

If the host agent has a structured question-asking tool available, use it to ask these questions one at a time with clear options — for example, Claude Code's AskUserQuestion tool or GitHub Copilot's askQuestions tool. If no such tool is available, ask the questions directly in the chat response before generating code.

  1. Data source: Will appointments come from a database (bound mode with DataSet/BindingSource) or will they be created in code (unbound mode)?
  2. Resources: Does the scheduler need to show multiple resources (rooms, employees, etc.) side-by-side? If yes, the Resources collection and GroupType = SchedulerGroupType.Resource are required.
  3. Views needed: Which views should be available to the end user? Day, Work Week, Month, Timeline, Gantt, Agenda, Year — or a subset?
  4. Recurrence: Are recurring appointments required? If yes, the data source needs an int column for Type and a string column for RecurrenceInfo.
  5. Reminders: Are reminder alerts needed? If yes, a string column for ReminderInfo is required in the data source.
  6. Appearance customization: Is conditional coloring (labels/statuses) enough, or does the app need owner-draw appointments?
  7. RibbonForm: Should the scheduler be paired with a RibbonControl for the built-in view-switcher and appointment toolbar?

Refer to references/getting-started.md When you need to: install the NuGet package, add SchedulerControl and SchedulerDataStorage in the designer or in code, wire them together, author the .Designer.cs file (control + storage + mappings in InitializeComponent) so the form stays designer-editable, configure mappings, add a DateNavigator, pair with a RibbonForm, and set the initial date via Start.

In a real designer-backed form, declare the SchedulerControl and SchedulerDataStorage as fields and create/wire them (including DataStorage, views, and mappings) inside InitializeComponent() in MainForm.Designer.cs; keep only data loading (assigning DataSource, creating appointments) and event handlers in MainForm.cs. This keeps the form editable in the WinForms designer — see references/getting-started.md for the full designer-file version.

Constraints & Rules

CRITICAL — follow these rules in every interaction:

  1. Verify the build — After any code changes, run dotnet build and report errors before claiming success.
  2. Author the form's .Designer.cs, not the constructor body. For a designer-backed form, declare the SchedulerControl, the SchedulerDataStorage, and any DateNavigator as fields of the *.Designer.cs partial class and create/configure them inside InitializeComponent(), wrapping setup in ((System.ComponentModel.ISupportInitialize)(schedulerDataStorage1)).BeginInit() / ((System.ComponentModel.ISupportInitialize)(schedulerControl1)).BeginInit()EndInit(). Keep only data loading (assigning DataSource, creating appointments) and event handlers in the form's .cs file. Do not new the control/storage or build mappings/views in the constructor body — that leaves the designer file empty so the form cannot be reopened in the Visual Studio WinForms designer. See references/getting-started.md.
  3. Do not mix DevExpress package versions — Reference DevExpress functionality through the DevExpress.Win.Scheduler NuGet package (never assembly DLLs by path), and keep every DevExpress package in the project on the same version.
  4. Always use SchedulerDataStorageSchedulerStorage (the legacy type) is obsolete since v18.1. Never generate code using SchedulerStorage or AppointmentStorage.
  5. Bind collections via DataSource, not item-by-item — In bound mode, assign the whole collection to storage.Appointments.DataSource (and storage.Resources.DataSource) and configure mappings; do not loop and Add appointments/resources one at a time for data that comes from a source. Per-item CreateAppointment + Add is for unbound mode or ad-hoc additions only.
  6. CreateAppointment + Add — In unbound mode you must call both storage.CreateAppointment(...) and storage.Appointments.Add(apt). Creating an appointment does not automatically add it.
  7. Set RecurrenceInfo.Start = apt.Start — Failure to set this causes incorrect occurrence generation.
  8. Host form must be XtraForm or RibbonForm — Plain Form works but loses consistent skin rendering and the smart-tag "Create Ribbon" option.
  9. DevExpress.XtraScheduler.Drawing — Always import this namespace when working with AppointmentViewInfo in custom draw or AppointmentViewInfoCustomizing events.
  10. Mappings are bound-mode onlyStart, End, and Subject are the minimum required mappings in bound mode; for recurring appointments add Id, Type, and RecurrenceInfo, and for reminders add ReminderInfo. In unbound mode, do not set mappings — create appointments in code.
  11. Keep the time ruler visible — Day and Work Week views show a vertical time ruler by default (TimeRulers[0]). Do not clear a view's TimeRulers; without a ruler users cannot tell which time slot a cell represents.
  12. Do not set themes/skins — Do not generate code that sets UserLookAndFeel.Default.SkinName or calls DevExpress.Skins.SkinManager. Skin management is the application's responsibility, not the scheduler's.
  13. Adding assembly references (.NET Framework): Resolve the required assemblies via the DevExpress Docs MCP, add the corresponding NuGet package, or — if a visual designer is available — have the developer drag the control from the Toolbox so references are added automatically. Avoid manually editing the .csproj references node to add new assembly references.
