3 things to look at

  • 25 days oldThe repository was created 25 days ago. New is not bad, but a brand new repository carrying a familiar-sounding name is the shape a typosquat arrives in, and there has been no time for anyone else to find a problem with it.
  • no licenseNo license file was found in the repository. Code published without one is not open source by default, so using it at work is a question for whoever answers licensing questions where you are.
  • 0 stars0 stars. Stars are a popularity signal and not a quality one, but at this level it is likely that nobody has read this closely except its author, and you would be relying on your own review.

What its author says it does

Copied from the file, not written here

Determine where a photo, video, or description was taken. Analyze shadows, sun position, terrain, and infrastructure to pinpoint locations. Use when the user needs to geolocate an image, find a place, or verify coordinates, even if they don't mention "geolocation" or "OSINT."

Bellingcat Geolocation Tools

Tools for determining the precise location where photos, videos, or descriptions were captured. Combine shadow analysis, sun position, and OpenStreetMap queries to narrow down locations.

Choosing Tools

  • Use visual-cue and shadow tools to narrow a location; use map and OpenStreetMap search tools to test a candidate location.
  • Confirm a location with more than one independent clue or source.

Investigation Tips

  • Start with SunCalc to determine possible dates/times based on shadow length and direction
  • Use ShadowMap or ShadeMap to simulate shadows for a specific date/time at a candidate location
  • GeoHints provides regional visual cues (traffic lights, utility poles) to narrow down countries
  • Spot and OpenStreetMap Search let you query OSM features near coordinates using natural language
  • Combine multiple tools to cross-verify: SunCalc for sun position, GeoHints for regional clues, OSM for feature proximity
