Navigating JIM Review (jim-review-process)

When to trigger

• The paper was just submitted and the team wants to know what happens next
• Months have passed with no word and someone wants to nudge the editor
• The group is estimating revision timelines for planning (tenure clocks, dissertations)
• Pre-submission, to engineer around JIM's known desk-reject triggers

The pipeline

1. Administrative screen. ScholarOne staff/editorial check: file split (title page vs. anonymized main document), 50-page cap, 200-word abstract, formatting. Failures bounce back without review — annoying but recoverable.
2. Editor screen. The Editor-in-Chief (Ayşegül Özsomer since 2024 — verify the masthead) reads for scope and bar. A meaningful share of submissions end here; see the desk-reject list below.
3. AE and reviewers. Surviving papers go to an associate/area editor and typically two to three double-anonymized reviewers drawn from the international marketing community — expect at least one measurement-focused reader on any multi-country survey, and reviewers located in or expert on your sampled regions.
4. Decision. Reject; reject-and-resubmit (a real door at AMA journals — a new submission with a fresh review team is being invited); major revision; minor revision; conditional accept. First rounds at specialist AMA journals commonly take roughly three to five months — treat any figure as folklore until confirmed on current data; the office responds to polite status queries after ~4 months of silence.

Desk-reject triggers specific to JIM

• Single-country data, no cross-national theory. The setting is foreign; the theory is not international. The most common trigger by reputation.
• Culture as epilogue. Country differences found, then explained post hoc with a cultural dimension never hypothesized.
• No equivalence evidence. Cross-country scale comparisons with no invariance testing or translation protocol.
• Domestic replication abroad. "X, established in the U.S., holds in country Y" with no boundary-condition theorizing.
• Wrong journal. An IB/strategy paper (FDI, governance) without a marketing mechanism, or a general marketing paper where the international element is a robustness footnote.
• Managerial silence. No implication a border-crossing firm could act on.

If any of these describes the paper, do not submit hoping for reviewer mercy — route back to jim-topic-selection or jim-methods.

What JIM reviewers reward

Reviewer-proofing is cheaper than rebutting. Papers that fare well arrive with: a pre-committed invariance table; a country-selection rationale on the focal dimension; formal tests of every claimed country difference; implications framed as market profiles; and honest scope statements ("our two-country contrast cannot separate income from individualism; we therefore…"). Pre-empting the alternative explanation a regional expert will raise — response styles, sampling differences, a local market shock during fieldwork — signals craft.

Waiting productively

• Log the manuscript ID, submission date, and status changes; ScholarOne statuses ("under review," "awaiting AE recommendation") are informative.
• Draft the anticipated-objections memo now: the five hardest questions and your best answers, with analyses pre-run. It becomes the rebuttal skeleton.
• Consider a JIM paper development workshop (the journal runs them periodically at AMS/AMA conferences) for the next project — they are fit-calibration gold.
• Do not submit the paper elsewhere in parallel; AMA journals enforce exclusivity.
• Watch for special-issue calls (recent examples: global sustainability; AI in international marketing) — a well-matched special issue changes the reviewer pool and the fit conversation for follow-on work.

Decision-letter triage preview

Reject with signal (reviewers engaged the theory) → fix and target IMR/JWB or rebuild for a new JIM submission if invited. Reject-and-resubmit → treat as a major revision with the freedom (and risk) of a fresh team. Major revision → the modal good outcome; expect measurement and identification demands, possibly a new country or study. Minor revision → execute precisely, no scope creep. Anti-patterns

• Nudging the editor at week six of a normal cycle
• Reading "under review" tea leaves daily instead of writing the objections memo
• Treating reject-and-resubmit as a rejection (it is an invitation) or as an acceptance (it is not)
• Arguing scope with a desk rejection instead of fixing the international-theory gap it named
• Planning a tenure case around a single JIM round going perfectly
