Frame Competitive Differentiation
Purpose
Help teams analyze their competitive landscape and articulate a clear, defensible differentiation position.
Skill type
Conceptual skill
Use this skill when
- The team struggles to articulate why their product is different or better
- A new competitor has entered the market and positioning needs to be reviewed
- The team is preparing a launch and needs a clear differentiation story
- Sales or marketing needs a competitive narrative
Do not use this skill when
- The team needs product vision (use define-product-vision)
- The team needs GTM messaging and launch (use gtm skills)
- The goal is pricing and packaging (use pricing skills)
Required inputs
- Product description and key capabilities
- Target segment
- Known competitors (at least 2–3)
Optional inputs
- Customer feedback on why they chose your product
- Win/loss analysis
- Product-market fit assessment
- Pricing context
- Positioning statement drafts
Upstream context
Works best when:
- Product vision is defined
- Target segment is clear
- Key product capabilities are known
If upstream context is missing
If the competitive landscape is completely unknown or the product is very early-stage, produce a competitive analysis framework rather than a differentiation statement.
Downstream handoff
Output can feed:
- gtm positioning and messaging skills
- define-product-vision (revisit if differentiation reveals strategic gaps)
Instructions
- Identify the primary competitive alternatives (direct, indirect, status quo).
- Map key dimensions of comparison relevant to the target segment.
- Identify where the product wins, loses, and is undifferentiated.
- Identify the most defensible differentiation angle.
- Draft a differentiation statement.
- Identify risks and challenges to sustaining differentiation.
Output
Provide:
- Competitive landscape summary (direct and indirect alternatives)
- Differentiation map: where you win / lose / are parity
- Primary differentiation angle
- Differentiation statement
- Defensibility assessment (how hard is this to copy?)
- Risks and gaps
- Confidence level: provisional / context-informed / ready-to-use
Risks / caveats
- Do not claim differentiation in areas where the product is actually at parity
- "Better UX" and "more features" are weak differentiation — push for specificity
- Differentiation must be anchored to what the target segment values
