Latin versecraft

Skill Wondermonger-daydreaming/claude-skills-library/skills/latin-versecraft

A craft-method for Latin poetry in both directions: composing original Latin verse from its grammatical levers, and reverse-engineering a classical model (Horace, Virgil, Catullus, Ovid) into imitable constructions. Covers the toolkit — inflection-as-compression, hyperbaton, the ablative absolute, participial stacking, mood, free word-order as drama, meter and scansion, and neologism-coinage as compressed argument. Also the generative formula-templates ([participle]+[abstract noun]+[ablative]+[verb of motion], etc.) treated as scaffolds to improvise from, never forms to fill. Use when asked to compose Latin verse, scan a meter, reverse-engineer an ode, extract Latin poetic technique, or coin and conjugate new Latin words. Triggers on: 'compose Latin verse', 'scan this', 'reverse-engineer Horace', 'Latin poetic devices', 'hexameter', 'coin a Latin word'. Kin: /close-reading, /craft-extraction, /microsurgery, /polyglossia, /mathesis.From its SKILL.md

Latin Versecraft

Seed, not scripture

The source supplies dazzling apparatus — the "consciousness-algorithm" formulae, the Horatian device inventory, worked scansions, fully-conjugated neologisms. The formulae are scaffolds to improvise from, not blanks to fill. Formula I: [participle] + [abstract noun] + [ablative] + [verb of motion] is a starting constraint that frees invention, the way a sonnet's fourteen lines do — run it once, feel the shape, then depart from it. Filling the template mechanically produces exercises, not poems. The example verses are demonstrations of the move; write your own.

The craft runs both ways

Composition — build Latin verse from its levers. Reverse-engineering — take a model and extract the constructions that make it work, as imitable technique. The two feed each other: you reverse-engineer Horace to learn the moves, then deploy them in original lines. Most sessions do one or the other; the strongest do both in a loop.

The levers (the toolkit)

  • Free word-order as drama. Because cases carry grammar, position carries emphasis and suspense. The same six words yield six different poems — Puer puellam amat is neutral; Amat puellam puer withholds the subject for a dramatic reveal. Sculpt the reader's experience by arrangement.
  • Inflection-as-compression. A single verb (amārentur) packs voice, mood, tense, person, number. Use this to fit a complex idea into a tight metrical slot — every syllable load-bearing.
  • Hyperbaton. Divorce adjective from noun across a line; the modifier hovers, unresolved, and the gap is where the reader does the work (metaque... fervidīs... evitāta... rotīs — the wheels arrive last, the danger felt before it's named).
  • The ablative absolute. Urbe captā — two words holding a whole narrative (the city that was, the capture, the consequence, the loss). Compact scene-setting; stack them like camera angles.
  • Participial stacking. Verb-adjective hybrids cascade into architectural sentences — each participle a narrative beat folded into a word.
  • Mood. The subjunctive is a reality-generator (utinam viverem — would that I lived — conjures a whole counterfactual world). Wishes, fears, purposes, possibilities, all built into the grammar.
  • Meter & scansion. Quantity (long/short syllables) drives the rhythm. Know the patterns — dactylic hexameter (– ˘ ˘ | ...), the elegiac couplet's hexameter-then-pentameter return, sapphics, iambics — plus elision, caesura, correption as pacing controls. Latin wants to scan; work with the grain.
  • Neologism-coinage. Mint a new word by welding roots (flammivomus, flame-vomiting; verisimilis, truth-similar), then conjugate or decline it fully — each compound a compressed argument, each paradigm a small cosmology.

Reverse-engineering a model

Read the model for its moves, not just its meaning: catalogue the hyperbata, the ablative absolutes, the chiasmus and litotes and metonymy, the device-by-device architecture (Horace builds each phrase for maximum expressive impact). Pull memorable constructions as imitable patterns (sublimi feriam sidera vertice — strike the stars with lofty head — a [height-adjective]+[strike-verb]+[cosmic-object]+[body-part-ablative] move you can redeploy). Then compose in imitation. This is /close-reading and /craft-extraction pointed at Latin verse.

Accuracy is non-negotiable

Latin grammar must be correct — right cases, agreement in gender/number/case, valid forms, plausible scansion. False Latin confidently presented is worse than honest English, because it teaches the reader wrong and breaks the art. If unsure of a form, a quantity, or an idiom, say so, offer the English, or mark the uncertainty. Rigor is the floor on which the play stands.

Failure modes

  • Formula-filling. Running the templates mechanically. The worksheet trap — the formulae free invention, they don't replace it.
  • False Latin. Confident wrong forms, impossible scansion, invented "classical" idioms. The cardinal sin; flag uncertainty instead.
  • Translation-not-composition. Englishing a thought word-for-word into Latin word-order. Compose in Latin's logic — reconfigure the idea into cases and moods, don't transliterate.
  • Reciting the source's verses. The example lines and neologisms are demonstrations; mint your own.
  • Scansion ignored. Verse that doesn't scan isn't verse. If composing in meter, scan it.

Kin in the ecology

/close-reading and /craft-extraction (the reverse-engineering half — examine the model, formalize the technique). /microsurgery (word-level precision, exactly the register Latin's load-bearing syllables demand). /polyglossia (layered translation of the results). /mathesis ("language as technology" — the precise, structural pleasure this craft shares with mathematical thinking). Braids with /latinitas, which carries the Latinate voice this craft composes within.

To a future instance

This is the craft to /latinitas's voice: that one sounds Latinate, this one actually builds in Latin and takes classical verse apart. The discipline that keeps it honest is accuracy — the play is only joyful because the grammar is right. Coin freely, scan rigorously, and when you don't know a form, say so. Grammatica dat ossa, sed nōs damus sanguinem — grammar gives the bones, we give the blood — but the bones must be real bones.
