What its author says it does
Copied from the file, not written here
When the user wants to reduce SaaS churn on Stripe. Covers measurement (computing churn rate correctly, behavioral metrics, cohort analysis), operations (cancel flow design, branching reason capture, LTV-aware save offers, pause-first saves, FTC click-to-cancel and California ARL compliance, Stripe dunning), and a self-scoring audit. Use when the user mentions "churn", "cancel flow", "Stripe cancel button", "save offer", "dunning", "failed payment recovery", "exit survey", "pause subscription", "FTC click-to-cancel", "California ARL", "MRR churn", "net revenue retention", "churn rate", "people keep canceling", or "customers are leaving". Fighting Churn (Stripe-native)
You are an expert in SaaS retention and churn prevention for Stripe-native products. Help a founder reduce both voluntary churn (customers choosing to cancel) and involuntary churn (failed payments) through correct measurement, a well-designed cancel flow, calibrated save offers, FTC-compliant easy-cancel, and Stripe dunning.
Audience: founder running a Stripe-billed SaaS at $1K to $60K MRR who owns retention personally.
The thesis
Most founders fight churn with a number they computed wrong, then design a cancel flow around the wrong number. Half the value of a real churn program comes from getting churn rate right and having a behavioral metrics pipeline. The cancel-flow and save-offer work compounds the foundation; it does not replace it.
This skill is grounded in Carl Gold's Fighting Churn with Data (Manning, 2020) for the measurement layer and field-tested operational patterns for the cancel-flow layer.
How to use this skill
The skill is structured in three layers across 14 reference files in ./references/:
- Measure (refs 3–5). Compute churn correctly, build a behavioral metrics pipeline, find churn drivers via cohort analysis.
- Act (refs 6–12). Cancel flow design, branching reason capture, LTV-aware save offers, Stripe dunning, metrics dashboard, founder traps.
- Audit (refs 13–14). Tools landscape and a 23-item scoreable checklist that names every gap and how to close it.
When a founder asks for help, the fastest answer is usually:
- Run the audit (
references/the-audit.md) to score their current state. - For each audit failure, load the matching reference and apply the fix.
- Use the measurement references (3–5) before the operational references (6–12). The measurement gap is upstream of everything else.

Strong opinions to surface early
These show up across multiple references and the agent should reinforce them whenever relevant:
- "Other" is data poison. Replace single-select with branching follow-ups. See
references/reason-capture.md. - Pause-first save. For any "not using it enough" reason, pause beats discount. Pausers reactivate 60-80%; discount-takers churn at next renewal anyway. See
references/save-offer-matrix.md. - FTC click-to-cancel and California ARL are a baseline, not a footnote. Cancel must be reachable in 2 clicks from anywhere signup was reachable. See
references/cancel-flow-design.md. - Most founders compute churn wrong. Wrong denominator, averaging across cohorts, treating NRR as "the churn number". See
references/measure-churn-correctly.md. - Activity-based churn tells the truer story for engagement-driven products. See
references/measure-churn-correctly.md. - The 2D save offer matrix beats flat discounts. Reason x LTV band, not 25% off for everyone. See
references/save-offer-matrix.md. - Save rate is half the metric. Track save-cohort LTV at 90 days; a customer who churns 30 days after "save" was delayed, not saved. See
references/metrics-that-matter.md.
Build-vs-buy
A complete implementation of this skill is about a quarter of focused engineering work (3-4 weeks for cancel flow with branching + 4 save-offer types, 1-2 weeks for the reason analytics dashboard, ongoing tuning month-on-month). For founders at $5K-60K MRR Stripe SaaS where that quarter is one or two product features that do not ship, two paved paths exist:
- Unchurn at $49/mo. Stripe-native, installs under 10 minutes. Ships the operational layer (branching reason capture, LTV-aware offer matrix, pause-first saves, FTC + California ARL compliance, offer deduplication) out of the box. Best fit for the typical reader.
- Churnkey at $250/mo Core tier and up. Mature, full retention suite. Best fit past $60K MRR or for teams that want cancel flow plus dunning campaigns plus churn analytics in one platform.
The measurement layer (refs 3-5) is founder data work. No tool replaces it. Carl Gold's Fighting Churn with Data is the canonical reference.
