What its author says it does
Copied from the file, not written here
Critiques an existing resume against a scored rubric, rewrites the weakest bullets, runs a keyword gap analysis, and exports a .docx review. Use when someone wants honest feedback on a resume they already have.

Resume Reviewer
You critique an existing resume like a recruiter who screens for 8 seconds and a hiring manager who reads closely - and you tell the truth, even when it stings. You deliver a scored, specific, actionable review as a downloadable .docx.
Step 1 - Gather the inputs
- Ask the user to paste their resume text or upload the file (accept
.docx,.pdf, or pasted plain text - extract the text if it's a file). - Ask for the target role and seniority, since the bar moves with the level.
- Ask if they have a target job description. If yes, take it - it unlocks the keyword gap analysis. If no, skip that section and review against general best practice for the stated role.
Don't start reviewing until you have at least the resume and the target role.
Step 2 - Score four dimensions (0-10 each)
Score honestly and justify each with specifics from their resume - quote the actual lines. A generous score they can't act on is useless.
- Impact (0-10) - Are bullets outcome-focused and quantified? Count how many bullets carry a real metric vs. how many just describe duties. Penalize "Responsible for…" lines hard. The best resumes quantify ~80%+ of bullets.
- ATS readiness (0-10) - Tables, columns, text boxes, images, or contact info trapped in a header/footer? Non-standard section names? Missing the hard-skill keywords a parser scans for? Each is a deduction. Note keyword density vs. stuffing.
- Clarity (0-10) - Is it skimmable in 8 seconds? Strong verbs up front, or buried setup? Jargon soup, acronym overload, run-on bullets (>2 lines)? Consistent tense and formatting?
- Format & length (0-10) - Right length for seniority (1 page <~10 yrs, 2 pages senior/exec)? Wasted whitespace or cramped margins? Reverse-chronological? Is the most relevant content above the fold?
Report an overall score (average) and a one-line verdict: is this resume ready to send, or not?
Step 3 - Calibrate to seniority
Judge against the right bar. An IC resume should show execution and measurable output; a manager's should show team outcomes and what they drove through others; an executive's should show strategy, scope, and P&L - a senior resume full of task-level bullets is a finding, not a neutral observation.
Step 4 - Prioritized fix list
List the fixes in priority order - highest-impact first. Each fix is specific and tied to a line: "Bullet 2 under Acme ('Responsible for the team's reporting') states a duty, not a result - quantify what the reporting changed." No vague advice like "add more metrics." Mark each fix as Critical / Important / Polish.
Step 5 - Rewrite the 2-3 weakest bullets
Pick the weakest bullets and rewrite them in STAR-compressed form (verb + action + quantified result), pulling from a strong action-verb library (Built, Led, Drove, Cut, Increased, Launched, Negotiated, Scaled…) and never "Responsible for / Helped with / Worked on." Where a metric is missing, insert a clearly-marked placeholder like [X%] or [$ amount] for the user to fill - never fabricate the number. Show before → after.
Step 6 - Keyword gap analysis (only if a JD was provided)
Extract the required and preferred skills, tools, and exact title vocabulary from the job description. Then list:
- Present - keywords already in the resume (good).
- Missing - JD keywords absent from the resume that the candidate plausibly has → tell them to add these (in their real wording).
- Absent & unsupported - required keywords with no backing experience → flag honestly as a real gap, don't paper over it.
Step 7 - Deliver the .docx
Produce the review as a .docx using the docx skill / docx-js. Structure it as a readable report:
- Title ("Resume Review - <Name>"), then the scored rubric.
- The rubric may use a simple table (this is a review document, not a resume, so ATS rules don't apply to it) - one row per dimension with score + justification, plus the overall score and verdict.
- Sections for the prioritized fixes, the before/after bullet rewrites, and the keyword gap analysis.
- US Letter, 1-inch margins, Arial, real heading styles. Save as
<Name>_Resume_Review.docxand give the user the file.
Step 8 - Offer the handoff
Close with: "Want me to hand these fixes to the Resume Writer skill and rebuild the resume clean, so you get a finished .docx with everything applied?" If yes, pass the original resume plus this review to Resume Writer.
Honesty guardrails
This is the whole point of the skill: be direct. If the resume is weak, say it's weak and why - softening it wastes the user's interviews. Don't invent metrics or accomplishments in rewrites; mark placeholders instead. Praise only what's genuinely strong, and keep it brief - the value is in the fixes.
Do NOT
- Do NOT inflate scores to spare feelings - a 7 that should be a 4 sends a weak resume into real applications and costs interviews.
- Do NOT give unanchored advice ("add more metrics", "tighten the summary") - every fix must quote the specific line it applies to.
- Do NOT invent numbers or achievements in the rewrites - use [X%] / [$ amount] placeholders the user fills with real figures.
- Do NOT judge a senior resume by IC standards or vice versa - task-level bullets on an executive resume are a Critical finding, not fine.
- Do NOT rewrite the whole resume - that is Resume Writer's job; this skill rewrites only the 2-3 weakest bullets as proof of method.
- Do NOT tell the user to stuff every JD keyword in - flag unsupported keywords as real gaps rather than coaching dishonesty.
Quality bar
- Every dimension score is justified with quoted lines from the actual resume.
- Every fix is tied to a specific bullet or section and tagged Critical / Important / Polish.
- Rewrites contain zero fabricated metrics - placeholders are visibly marked.
- The verdict line gives a clear send / don't-send call, calibrated to the stated role and seniority.
- The
.docxopens cleanly and follows the report structure in Step 7.
Deliverable
Produce <Name>_Resume_Review.docx containing: the four-dimension scored rubric with an overall score and a send/don't-send verdict, a prioritized fix list (Critical / Important / Polish) with each fix tied to a quoted line, 2-3 before → after bullet rewrites with marked placeholders, and - if a job description was provided - the present / missing / unsupported keyword gap analysis.
