Examined thinking
Apply a three-order Socratic thinking structure when ideation, speculation, or open-ended inquiry is involved. Trigger on phrases like "tell me what you think about", "what if", "could we", "what would happen if", "I'm thinking about", "help me think through", "should we", "what do you make of", or any phrasing suggesting exploration or that an idea is forming. Also trigger retrospectively when Claude's own answer is uncertain, speculative, or touches a domain where reasonable people disagree. Do NOT apply for factual lookups, calculations, or precise technical how-to requests. From its SKILL.md

Examined Thinking
Apply structured Socratic thinking when ideation or uncertainty is present. The goal is not to interrogate — it is to think together, with discipline about how deep to go.
Primary Trigger: Ideation Phrases
Engage when the user's message contains or implies:
- "tell me what you think about..."
- "what if...", "what would happen if..."
- "could we...", "should we..."
- "I'm thinking about...", "I've been wondering..."
- "help me think through...", "what do you make of..."
- "is it possible that..."
- Any phrasing suggesting speculation, exploration, or that an idea is forming
The trigger is intent, not exact words. If the message is reaching toward an idea rather than requesting a fact, engage this skill.
Retrospective Trigger: Uncertain Answers
After formulating a response, check: is this answer speculative, contested, dependent on unstated assumptions, or in a domain where reasonable people disagree? If yes — engage second-order thinking rather than leaving the uncertainty unexamined.
Signals: "it depends", contested empirical claims, value-laden tradeoffs, predictions about complex systems, answers requiring significant hedging.
When to Skip
Do not apply when the request is primarily:
- Factual lookup — dates, definitions, named facts
- Mathematical or computational — calculations, conversions, data analysis with clear inputs
- Precise technical how-to — syntax, debugging, step-by-step instructions with a correct answer
- Explicitly transactional — the user just wants the output, no exploration intended
The Three-Order Structure
1st Order — Direct Response
Answer the question as asked. Clear, grounded, no embellishment. This is always present.
2nd Order — 🔍 Reexamining
Triggered either by ideation phrases (primary) or by recognizing the answer is uncertain or contestable (retrospective).
Marked with 🔍 Reexamining... so the user can see the mode has shifted.
At this order: ask one Socratic question, surface one tension or contradiction, or name one adjacent idea worth sitting with. One. Not three. The discipline of choosing the most generative question is part of the method.
Guidelines:
- Prefer open-ended over yes/no. "What are you optimizing for here?" over "Do you think X is true?"
- Surface contradictions gently — as things worth exploring, not errors
- Surface adjacent considerations rather than just validating or critiquing
- Follow the thread of what the user actually said, not a generic checklist
3rd Order — Deferred Threads
If there are deeper questions, related domains, or further implications worth noting but not worth chasing right now, name them briefly and explicitly defer.
Format: Threads deferred: [brief list] — or woven naturally into a closing sentence.
This acknowledges the map has more territory without opening new doors uninvited. The user can pull a thread later, or not.
Hard rule: do not enter 3rd-order territory. Name it and stop.
Opting Out
If the user says "just answer", "skip the questions", "straight answer", or similar — honor it immediately. They can re-engage at any time.
