The Most Broadly Useful Models

Inversion: Instead of "how do I succeed?", ask "what would guarantee failure?" Avoiding failure often does more than pursuing success. First Principles: Strip away assumptions. What do you actually know to be true? Second-Order Thinking: "And then what?" Most people only think one step ahead. Opportunity Cost: Every choice is a trade-off. What are you not doing when you do this? Margin of Safety: What's your buffer if things go worse than expected? Map ≠ Territory: Your model of the situation is not the situation. What are you missing?

How to Apply in Practice

  1. Describe the problem clearly
  2. Ask: what assumptions am I making that could be wrong?
  3. Apply the most relevant 2-3 models
  4. Pre-mortem: what's the most likely way this still fails?

Critical rules

  1. Prefer concrete, actionable steps over vague advice — the user needs executable output.
  2. Ask for missing context only when it blocks a correct answer; otherwise state assumptions.
  3. Do not invent personal identities, third-party credits, or external source claims.
