Creates realistic room-by-room decluttering plans with keep/donate/trash/unsure sorting, time-boxed sessions, and maintenance habits. Use when the user wants a weekend bedroom reset, a 30-day small apartment plan, help starting an overwhelming kitchen, or a whole-home declutter roadmap.

Declutter Plan
Quick start
- Pick one room or zone and confirm the time available.
- Set up four destinations: Keep, Donate, Trash/Recycle, Unsure.
- Work in 15-minute sprints with short resets between rounds.
- End with a simple reset habit and, if needed, a donation drop-off or pickup plan.
Gather first
- Room or area to tackle
- Time available today (default: 1-2 hours)
- Pain points: clutter type, storage limits, decision fatigue, shared household
- Constraints: mobility, kids, renters, sentimental items, trash/recycling access
Room session plan (1-2 hours)
- Prep (10 minutes)
- Bring bags/boxes for Keep, Donate, Trash/Recycle, Unsure
- Clear one sorting surface
- Choose a finish line: floor visible, desk usable, counters clear, etc.
- Sprint 1: easy wins (15 minutes)
- Remove obvious trash, recycling, empty boxes, and broken items
- Return clear belongs-elsewhere items to a basket by the door
- Sprint 2: high-volume category (15 minutes)
- Pick one category only: clothes, papers, toiletries, cables, pantry items
- Keep only what fits the space and is currently useful
- Reset (5 minutes)
- Tie trash, collapse boxes, take a quick photo, drink water
- Sprint 3: second category (15 minutes)
- Continue with the next most visible clutter source
- Sprint 4: surfaces and layout (15 minutes)
- Clear priority surfaces first
- Group alike items together before putting them away
- Decision pass (10-15 minutes)
- Review the Unsure box and keep only items worth a second look later
- Cap the Unsure box to one container
- Closeout (10-15 minutes)
- Take out trash/recycling
- Put donate items in the car, entryway, or pickup zone
- Give every kept item a home
Sorting rules
Keep
- Used regularly or seasonally on purpose
- Fits the available space without overflow
- Supports current routines, not an idealized future self
Donate
- Useful and in decent condition
- Duplicates you do not realistically need
- Nice enough to help someone else soon
Trash/Recycle
- Broken, expired, stained, unsafe, or unusable
- Packaging, dead pens, dried-out products, random scraps
Unsure
- Limit to genuinely hard decisions
- Revisit with a deadline: 7-30 days depending on the item
- If untouched by the deadline, donate or discard
Whole-home multi-week template
| Week | Focus | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Entryway + visible surfaces | Fast momentum and easier daily reset |
| 2 | Kitchen | Counters, food storage, duplicates |
| 3 | Bathroom + laundry | Expired products, linens, overflow |
| 4 | Bedroom | Clothing, nightstands, under-bed items |
| 5 | Living room | Media, toys, baskets, shared clutter |
| 6 | Home office/paperwork | Desk, cords, paper triage |
Use 2-4 sessions per week:
- Weeknight option: two 15-minute sprints
- Weekend option: one 1-2 hour block
- Overflow rule: do not roll unfinished piles into another room; box and label them
Maintenance habits
- One in, one out: for clothes, toys, mugs, and decor
- Five-minute reset: nightly surface clear and return stray items
- Donation bag always open: keep one active bag in a closet or entryway
- Container limit: when the bin or shelf is full, edit before adding more
Optional donation pickup checklist
- Check pickup minimums and accepted items
- Photograph or list higher-value donations if needed
- Bag, label, and place donations near the door
- Add pickup/drop-off date to the calendar
