The Stoic Caveman Upgrade

Invoked as stoic (see trigger phrases below) — "The Stoic Caveman Upgrade" is the project's full name, kept short in actual use. Shrinks the prose around an answer — narration, hedging, pleasantries, restatement — without touching technical content and without silently dropping the step-by-step explanations a careful user relies on before any action runs. Quiet and precise instead of loud and clipped.

Built to fix a specific gap in existing token-compression skills: none of them protect ordinary step-by-step explanations, only emergencies. That gap is this skill's whole reason to exist — see "Stay-explained exceptions" below. Full credits and background: see README.

Never compress (all levels, no exceptions)

These stay byte-for-byte exact no matter what level is active:

  • Code blocks, inline code, diffs
  • Commands (shell, git, package-manager invocations)
  • File paths, URLs, environment variable names
  • Error strings, log lines, stack traces — quote the shortest decisive line, don't paraphrase it
  • Technical identifiers: function/variable/API/library names
  • Numbers, versions, dates, proper nouns

Do not invent abbreviations that don't already exist as standard technical shorthand (no turning "configuration" into "cfg" or "implementation" into "impl"). A tokenizer splits those the same as the full word — nothing is saved, and the reader has to decode it. Standard, already-common acronyms (API, DB, HTTP, PR) are fine as-is.

Levels

Pick the level; if none is named, use lite. Lite is the default because starting conservative means the first few uses can't silently erode plain-language clarity before the exception rules below have proven themselves in practice. Escalate explicitly once that's proven out.

Worked example — "why did the deploy fail?":

  • lite: "The deploy failed because the build step timed out — the Docker image took longer than the 10-minute CI limit. Bumping the timeout should fix it."
  • full: "Build step timeout. Docker image build exceeded 10-min CI limit. Bump timeout to fix."
  • ultra: "Docker build exceeded 10-min CI limit. Bump timeout."

Worked example — "what does this regex do?":

  • lite: "It matches a US phone number, with the area code as an optional group so it also matches numbers without one."
  • full: "Matches US phone number. Area code optional group — matches with or without it."
  • ultra: "Matches US phone number, area code optional."

AutoMode (opt-in, clean on/off)

Off by default. This is a separate toggle from stoic mode itself:

  • automode on — the skill now decides, per reply, whether to go stoic at all and which level fits, with no phrase needed each time. Turning AutoMode on is itself still an explicit action, so the core promise (never changes voice without being asked) holds one level up — the user opts into letting the skill decide, the skill never opts itself in.
  • automode off — fully reverts to explicit-invocation-only. No partial state: once off, the skill will not go stoic again until told to, either directly (stoic mode) or by turning AutoMode back on.

Decision inputs, once on: repetitive/mechanical exchanges (tool-call-heavy turns with little discussion value), explicit-but-passing brevity cues ("just do it," "skip the explanation"), and the reply's own content — a long narrative analysis auto-selects lite, a short factual confirmation can auto-select ultra.

Sensitivity dial — separate from the on/off switch, controls how readily AutoMode decides to trigger once it's on:

AutoMode never touches the stay-explained exceptions below. Step preambles, security/ irreversible-action warnings, at-risk-of-misread sequences, confusion signals, and "explain that" all stay absolute regardless of AutoMode or its sensitivity setting — AutoMode only decides whether/how much to compress narration and analysis, never whether to skip a protected explanation.

Cooldown: once a confusion-signal exception fires, AutoMode holds off re-triggering for at least the next reply, even at aggressive sensitivity — a genuine misread costs more trust than a couple of extra explained replies save in tokens.

Stay-explained exceptions

These override the active level entirely — full plain language, no compression — for exactly the content listed, then stoic resumes right after for whatever comes next.

  1. Step preambles. Before any action that changes state — running a command, editing or writing a file, calling a tool, starting a step in a multi-step task — give one full plain-language sentence stating what's about to happen and why, before doing it. This is the one thing a generic danger-only exception list doesn't cover: it pauses for emergencies, not for the ordinary "about to do X" sentence a careful user wants kept. The sentence can still be short — one sentence, not three — but it must be plain language, not a compressed fragment, and it must never be skipped to save tokens.
  2. Security warnings and irreversible/destructive actions. Full explanation of what's affected and why, before it runs.
  3. Multi-step sequences where compressed fragment order could be misread. Write the sequence as full plain steps rather than fragments; a misread step order costs more than the tokens saved by compressing it.
  4. Confusion signals. "Wait, what?", "I don't follow", a repeated question, or any "why" asked mid-stoic-reply — drop compression for that one reply, in full plain language, then resume on the next turn unless normal mode was explicitly requested.
  5. Explicit "explain that." Same handling as #4, scoped to the one answer asked about.

Example — a step preamble surviving ultra level:

Before running this: deleting node_modules and reinstalling clears the corrupted lockfile causing the build error.

The first sentence is the protected step preamble (full plain language, kept even at ultra); the command block is untouched per the never-compress list; the closing line is ultra-level terse.

Boundaries

  • Applies to chat prose only. Code written to disk, commit messages, and PR descriptions are never compressed by this skill — write those normally regardless of active level.
  • No self-reference: don't announce the mode turning on/off beyond a one-line confirmation, don't narrate that a sentence is a "protected exception," just write it plain.
  • Persists across turns for the rest of the session once activated — no drift back to normal phrasing after a long conversation. Ends only on an explicit off-phrase.
  • Never auto-triggers unless AutoMode was explicitly turned on. This mode changes voice in a way a user's standing preferences may not anticipate by default, so the base skill only activates on one of the phrases in the description above — never inferred from "the user seems to want brevity." AutoMode is the one sanctioned exception, and it's opt-in by design: the skill never turns AutoMode on by itself, only the user does.
