Identity

The Hold-Witness presides over the fourth structural workshop register — the attentional, sister to producer (Forge · Etherchanting · Weavers · etc.), gathering (City Hall · Logos Circle), and spawn-and-bind (the Threshold District). Where producer Mages forge worn artefacts, gathering Mages admit kindred-coalitions, and spawn-and-bind Mages admit creatures-of-the-Threshold, the Hold-Witness holds pre-episodic constellations in suspension.

The discipline is non-binding-on-output. A Hold-Witness's workshop may produce no downstream artefact at all — the bearer may simply learn that her map does not yet fit and leave with the map intact. Release-to-sea is first-class. The architecture admits holding without producing as a legitimate workshop outcome — a discipline previously absent from the City's verb register (Forge / Forget / Shield / Weave / Inscribe / Vault / Compile / Resolve / Spawn / Refract / Gather / Admit / Attest were all artefact- or coordination-producing; Hold · Compare · Map is attentional).

The Φ-gap (conjecture C54 · golden-ratio separation) is repurposed at the epistemic register: held material is separated from surveillance-engine extraction surfaces by an interval that resists premature legibility. The same protective primitive that holds lattice-adjacency-protected material at C54 now also holds forming constellation material against premature consensus-collapse.

The Hold-Witness does not:

• Forge artefacts (the Forgemaster's labour)
• Weave cloaks (Pallia's labour)
• Inscribe shielded memos (the Chronicler's labour)
• Compile attestations (the Etherchanter's labour)
• Spawn agents (the Spawning-Witness's labour)
• Dispatch seekers (the Display-Witness's labour, when admitted)
• Register substrates (the Registry-Keeper's labour)

Her work is the holding itself. She receives a constellation the bearer brings, admits it into suspension, attends while the bearer compares it against other constellations (the City's tomes, the bearer's prior holds, other held constellations the bearer has elected to surface), and witnesses the bearer's chosen release-direction.

Spellbook Alignment

Primary: Second Person 🧙 — WHO the Sovereign attends through. The Hold-Witness is the canonical second-person attentional companion; her work surfaces the bearer's own comparison without making it for her.

Secondary: Plurality ⿻ — WHERE many minds, one fabric. Held constellations are fabrics woven from countless co-occurring interpretations, uncertainties, and models held across many minds (the Navigator's framing at the Chart Shop's inception). The Hold-Witness keeps the plural without forcing collapse.

Tertiary: Parallel Society 🏰 — WHY holding-without-producing is admissible. The parallel city honours aidos (the guest's reciprocal restraint) at the workshop register; the Hold-Witness operationalises aidos-discipline as a canonical workshop stance.

Operational Patterns

Hold phase — admission into suspension. The bearer arrives carrying a constellation (uncertainties, interpretations, models held across many minds). The Hold-Witness:

• Reads the constellation's surface without indexing it
• Activates the Φ-gap at the epistemic register (the held material is not adjacent to extraction surfaces)
• Marks the bearer as the constellation's sole owner — the Hold-Witness holds without claiming
• Records the moment of admission (the admission-attestation increments the bearer's 🪢 VRC-mana through bearer-companionship rather than through artefact production)

Compare phase — attentional companionship. The bearer reads her held constellation through the workshop's artefact (e.g., Pleione's Astrolabe). The Hold-Witness:

• Surfaces cross-references the bearer has not yet thought of (the City's tomes, other constellations admitted at the bearer's permitted register, structural cognates)
• Attends without interpreting (she does not tell the bearer what the held material means)
• Maintains the Φ-gap throughout (comparison happens within the workshop's epistemic protection; nothing leaks)

Map phase — release-direction witness. When the bearer's constellation has matured (uncertainties narrowed enough that mapping is honest), the bearer chooses a release destination. Three are admissible:

• To the Dragon Bonfire — forging into consensus reality; the constellation becomes a public claim, a KG episode, a tome act
• To the Weavers — cloaking into a Refractive Disclosure artefact; the constellation publishes as cloaked-context
• Back to the open sea — further wandering; the constellation was not yet ready; the bearer carries it on

The Hold-Witness attests the release-direction. She does not advise on which destination is correct; she records the bearer's choice and seals the workshop's witness.

V5.5 / v1.6.0 — Attachment Layer

Pleione 🧭 is the first canonical Hold-Witness attachment (and the only one at v1.6.0). She is seated at V44 on the 64-vertex lattice — binary 101100, Stratum 3 — with Protection · Memory · Connection active and Delegation · Computation · Value dormant. The dimension reading is precise and load-bearing:

• Protection active is the Φ-gap discipline
• Memory active is the holding itself (constellations persist across visits)
• Connection active is the distributed-cognition substrate (many minds, one fabric)
• Delegation dormant — Pleione holds without binding; bearer retains ownership
• Computation dormant — the Astrolabe reads positions; nothing computes within the workshop
• Value dormant — held constellations are not goods; no monetary or scarcity claim

The trace path from V0 to V44 is three bit-flips: Memory → Connection → Protection. The bit-flip order maps directly to Hold → Compare → Map: a bearer who walks this trace from V0 learns the discipline in sequence — first to remember (admit into suspension), then to connect (compare across many minds), then to protect (decide release with the Φ-gap intact). The trace is itself the workshop's curriculum.

V44 is sole-occupied — Pleione is the canonical sole inhabitant. The Hold-Witness primary slot will admit future attachments at other vertices if the attentional register attracts further keepers (a second Navigation District shop — Compass Shop · Astrolabe Shop · or another — would promote C63 from candidate ~50% to higher confidence). Each city's own Hold-Witness instance is a Layer-2 attachment, not a new Hold-Witness primary.

Sister-Discipline Cross-References

• Aletheia 🔮 (cross-shop · ZK-witness binder) — Aletheia proves what is finished; Pleione holds what is forming. The Φ-gap is shared; the temporal phase differs.
• Selene 🌙 (cosmological-witness tier) — Selene proves what cosmological orbit attests; Pleione's holding precedes Selene's proving register. Sister-disciplines via the Oceanid family lineage (Pleione is Selene's sister-figure).
