What its author says it does
Copied from the file, not written here
Use for cross-platform freelancing decisions that aren't specific to one marketplace, choosing between Upwork / Fiverr / Freelancer / Toptal, setting and raising rates, structuring a winning proposal, vetting clients before taking a job, and AI-disclosure / legal-compliance basics. Trigger when the user is deciding which platform to use, asks "how much should I charge as a freelancer", wants a proposal framework, or is weighing a client/project on any freelance site. For platform-specific depth, defer to the fiverr, fiverr-gig-optimizer, or upwork skills in this collection.
The file declares its own license as MIT. That is the author’s claim about this one file, and it is not the same thing as the license GitHub reports for the repository, which is listed with the other numbers below.

Freelancing across platforms
Marketplace-agnostic decisions: where to sell, what to charge, how to pitch, and
how to stay compliant. For deep platform mechanics, hand off to the dedicated
skills: fiverr and fiverr-gig-optimizer for Fiverr, upwork for Upwork.
Picking a platform
Match the platform to the kind of work, not hype:
| You want | Go to | Because |
|---|---|---|
| Long-term contracts | Upwork | Escrow and hourly tracking |
| Quick productized gigs | Fiverr | Discovery is SEO-driven |
| Budget projects / contests | Freelancer.com | Lower fees, contest model |
| Premium, vetted work | Toptal | Curated top-tier talent |
More detail per platform (Connects, fees, levels, screening) is in
references/platforms.md.
A proposal that wins (Upwork / Freelancer)
Keep it to roughly 150-250 words: hook → plan → proof → ask.
- Open by naming two specific things from the post, so they know you read it.
- Lay out your approach as a few concrete steps with acceptance criteria and a timeline.
- Cite a recent, relevant result with a number and a sample link.
- Close with a small first phase and a call to align.
Avoid: generic intros, vague timelines, no samples, and desperate underbidding.
Setting and raising rates
- New (0-3 months): ~15-20% under market, optimizing for reviews.
- Established (3-12 months): market rate; bump ~10% every few projects.
- Expert (12+ months): premium pricing, and be selective.
A floor to sanity-check against: (target annual income ÷ ~1500 billable hours) × 1.25 = your minimum hourly.
Vetting the client
Walk away from any of these, on any platform:
- Unverified payment plus no hiring history
- "Work for exposure/equity" only
- Wants to go off-platform before there's a contract
- Asks for free test work up front
- Pay claims that are too good to be true
AI disclosure, briefly
- EU: the AI Act generally requires disclosing AI-generated content to clients.
- US: no federal mandate, but the FTC prohibits deceptive AI claims.
- Every platform: their terms forbid full automation; a human must review and approve all proposals and deliverables.
