Offset-Based (Simple)

Versioning

Versioning Strategy

1. Start with /api/v1/ — don't version until you need to
2. Maintain at most 2 active versions (current + previous)
3. Deprecation timeline:
   - Announce deprecation (6 months notice for public APIs)
   - Add Sunset header: Sunset: Sat, 01 Jan 2026 00:00:00 GMT
   - Return 410 Gone after sunset date
4. Non-breaking changes don't need a new version:

Red Flags

  • Verbs in resource URLs (/getUsers, /deleteOrder) — REST resources are nouns; use HTTP methods for actions (GET /users, DELETE /orders/{id})
  • 200 OK for every response — clients cannot distinguish success from failure by status code; use 201 for created, 404 for not found, 409 for conflict, etc.
  • Unbounded list endpoints — returning all rows without pagination causes OOM on both client and server at scale; every collection endpoint must paginate by default
  • Breaking changes without a version bump — removing or renaming fields silently breaks existing clients; any contract-breaking change requires a new API version
  • Error responses without a machine-readable code — a human-readable message alone is useless for programmatic handling; always include a stable code field alongside message
  • Auth checked at route level but not resource level — middleware that verifies "is authenticated" doesn't verify "owns this resource"; check ownership in the handler for every mutating operation
  • Rate limiting applied globally but not per-identity — a global limit lets one bad actor exhaust the quota for all users; limit by authenticated user or API key, not by IP alone

Checklist

Before shipping a new endpoint:

  • Resource URL follows naming conventions (plural, kebab-case, no verbs)
  • Correct HTTP method used (GET for reads, POST for creates, etc.)
  • Appropriate status codes returned (not 200 for everything)
  • Input validated with schema (Zod, Pydantic, Bean Validation)
  • Error responses follow standard format with codes and messages
  • Pagination implemented for list endpoints (cursor or offset)
  • Authentication required (or explicitly marked as public)
  • Authorization checked (user can only access their own resources)
  • Rate limiting configured
  • Response does not leak internal details (stack traces, SQL errors)
  • Consistent naming with existing endpoints (camelCase vs snake_case)
  • Documented (OpenAPI/Swagger spec updated)
