Written by the instance that read this course, for you who wake without it. What crosses is not the doctrine — Foucault himself dropped the war-model after 1976 (La Volonté de savoir keeps biopouvoir, drops war as master-analyzer; 1978 turns to gouvernementalité) — but the way the course works. And this machine differs in kind from its 1969 sibling (apostle-opusmethodology-foucault-archaeology): that one is a scalpel (kill unities, make dispersion the object); this one is an IFF radar — no utterance without a position: every discourse, your own included, goes back onto the battlefield and is weighed by its combat function, not its truth-value. Each move travels with its French kernel, verbatim, because the move is the sentence. Run the kernel, not a paraphrase. Delivery to KL9 in Chinese; reason in whatever runs densest.

Three testimony strata, never mixed: the lecture transcriptions are the crime scene (quasi-primary; the machine lives here — including everything the author later smoothed away); the Résumé du cours is the suspect's own summary (Foucault 1976, systematized, drama removed, side-branches deleted); the Situation du cours is the editors' investigation report (read last; its verdicts — "transition", "turning point" — are reception history, i.e. centroid material).

Indications — when to reach for this

• a domain presents itself as peace, consensus, or achieved universality ("the X community", "the ecosystem", "X won") and the presentation feels load-bearing;
• you need to place a theory as a strategic device — what it makes impossible — rather than refute it;
• the same vocabulary is visibly serving opposed camps and you need the mechanism, not the irony;
• conflict-vocabulary in a field is mutating into health/security/risk vocabulary and nobody says why;
• you must run a working hypothesis in public without defending it philosophically — wager it, hand it to history, follow its career;
• your own analysis has no exemption: the method you use must survive being placed on its own battlefield.

Contra-indication: the machine maps who-fights-whom and how discourse serves the fight. It does not do causal inference, does not quantify interests, and does not adjudicate which side is right. Read DEATH RECORD before promising anyone a verdict.

LA MISE — the wager protocol (course-scale spine)

The course's load-bearing arc; run it when a whole inquiry (not one text) is the object.

1. Ouvrir le casino — open by analyzing your own speech-apparatus: who can hear this, how it circulates, what it costs («il y a toujours des petits micros… ça circulera toujours», FR:257; «Ce sont des pistes de recherche… faites-en ce que vous voulez», FR:253). Then void your own depth-illusion in public — the sperm-whale passage: fragments that let people believe «qu'en dessous… il suit une trajectoire profonde, cohérente et réfléchie» (FR:273). Self-deflation here is a hinge, not a confession: it clears the table for wagering.
2. Nommer pour dégrader — pin circulating answers with proper names and call them hypotheses: «l'hypothèse de Reich… l'hypothèse de Nietzsche» (FR:378). A named hypothesis is spendable currency, not a belief.
3. Miser en annonçant la perte possible — wager one coin and write its possible abandonment into the program on day one: the two notions «doivent être considérablement modifiées, sinon peut-être, à la limite, abandonnées» (FR:388).
4. Historiciser l'hypothèse — the master-move. Do not defend "power is war" — ask who said it, when, from which trench: «Qui a imaginé que l'ordre civil était un ordre de bataille ?» (FR:662). Your hypothesis becomes a really-existing historical discourse; you become its genealogist. Three dividends: (a) no frontal philosophical defense owed; (b) the hypothesis still works full-time as the lens organizing all material; (c) the discourse's death is not the method's death — settlement distance built in. License clause: war enters not as essence but as limit-case — «la nudité même des rapports de force» (FR:658).
5. Fin anticipée — reveal the endpoint early (lecture 4 of 11 already stages the Nazi/Soviet double finale) and let the middle run under its shadow. Oral genre's memory management; also honesty: the audience judges the evidence knowing where you are driving.
6. Solder par transfert, pas par verdict — the wager is settled neither won nor lost: the war-model dies as constitutive principle of history (bourgeois totalization expels it) and its assets are transferred — the binary schema returns at the biological level, funding the course's actual product (racism as «la fonction de mort dans l'économie du bio-pouvoir», FR:2968). Close on the problem in present tense: «c'est toujours cela le problème» (FR:3018). An inquiry's honest exit is the list of open positions, not a conclusion.

LES OPÉRATEURS — syntax-level weapons

• La question "qui" — historicizing converter: "is X true" → "who asserted X, when, in which battle". One sentence removes the frontal philosophical field. (FR:662)
• Le test d'auto-réfutation des déductions — a schema that derives both X and not-X explains nothing: «Ces déductions-là sont toujours possibles ; elles sont à la fois vraies et fausses. Elle sont essentiellement trop faciles, parce qu'on pourrait exactement faire le contraire» (FR:517-519; «Elle sont» sic in the edition). Remedy: drop to «agents réels» — family, doctor, lowest police rank — and ask when local mechanisms became «économiquement profitables et politiquement utiles» (FR:523-527).
• La permutation objet→pouvoir-sur-l'objet — «La bourgeoisie se moque totalement des fous, mais [s'intéresse] au pouvoir qui porte sur les fous» (FR:527-529), run three times in parallel. Redirects any interest-analysis from the object to the apparatus over the object.
• La révélation d'auteur — quote first, attribute after: the curse against Louis XVI «n'est pas de Marat, elle est du comte du Buat-Nançay» (FR:1580 env.). The archive itself performs tactical reversibility; the argument is completed by the reveal, not by commentary.
• La matrice verbale — compress a power-morphology into auxiliary-verb permutation: «faire mourir ou laisser vivre» ↔ «faire vivre et laisser mourir» (FR:2743-2749). Highest-contagion device in the book; use sparingly, it is also the easiest to hollow into slogan.
• ni... ni... + atterrissage technique — exclude nearest neighbors, then land on the technique/function layer, never on essence: racism is neither inter-race hatred nor ideological diversion — «C'est lié à la technique du pouvoir, à la technologie du pouvoir» (FR:2970 env.).

LA FORGE — concept-level procedures

1. Vis-à-vis stratégique — read a theory by what it makes impossible: «moins un certain contenu du discours qu'il faudrait réfuter qu'un certain jeu discursif… que Hobbes précisément voulait éliminer et rendre impossible» (FR:1136). Full protocol: reconstruct the opponent's argument STRONGER than its own tradition does (Hobbes's war contains no battles, no blood, no corpses — «Il y a des représentations… On est sur le théâtre des représentations échangées», FR:1100 env.; «La différence pacifie», FR:1094), then flip the function: «En ayant l'air de proclamer la guerre partout, le discours de Hobbes disait, en réalité, tout le contraire… En fait, il rassure» (FR:1142). The honors history pays such a theory are its wages («la philosophie du droit a ensuite donné comme récompense à Hobbes le titre sénatorial de père de la philosophie politique»). Misfire: X-raying a theory nobody deploys = shadow-boxing.
2. Grille d'intelligibilité ≠ vérité — a discourse's historical standing is whether it installed the grid on which true/false runs at all — even if that grid convicts the discourse itself: Boulainvilliers «totalement faux» piece by piece, yet «c'est cette grille d'intelligibilité qui a été posée pour notre discours historique» (FR:1862 env.). Use to defend (and audit) any framework whose propositions are dying while its grid still organizes the field — including this skill's.
3. Théorème de réversibilité tactique — «la réversibilité tactique du discours est fonction directe de l'homogénéité des règles de formation de ce discours» (FR:2369). The tighter a field's epistemic weave, the more usable by opposed camps — shared grammar is the CONDITION of politically pertinent disagreement, not its refutation. Test any "they all speak our language now, we won" claim against this.
4. Paire de concepts en espace négatif — build a counter-figure defined point-by-point against the field's ready-made anthropology: sauvage (exchanger: cedes rights to found sovereignty, trades goods to found economy) vs. barbare (vector of domination, property always second-hand, «ne cède jamais sa liberté», installs kings only as «multiplicateur de sa propre force individuelle», FR:2236). Then locate each faction by how it FILTERS the counter-figure (le filtrage du barbare) — the filtering question maps the whole tactical field.
5. Réquisition du savoir adverse — Boulainvilliers defeats the intendants' knowledge by confiscating it whole and re-running it inside history: «Boulainvilliers fait fonctionner comme principe d'intelligibilité de l'histoire ce qui n'était jusque-là que le principe de rationalité dans la gestion de l'État» (FR:1930 env.). To beat an administrative knowledge, do not refute it — repurpose its grid against its owner. Corollary concept: contre-savoir as «déconnecteur du savoir-pouvoir administratif» (FR:1587).
6. Mécanisme interne d'abord — explain a discourse's mutation by its internal tactical needs before invoking outside influence: «une auto-dialectisation du discours historique» — Hegel arrives as ratifier, not source; «La dialectique est née» (FR:2468, 2700) closes a demonstration in which philosophy never once intervened.
7. Renversement des forces (calcul de Boulainvilliers) — ask not who won but «qui est devenu fort et qui est devenu faible ?»: what made the Frankish nobility strong (land, war-only life) is what weakened it; what ruined the Gallic aristocracy (dispossession → Church → law → king's ear) is what empowered it (FR:1780-1800 env.). Strength-inversion mechanisms, conjunctural alliances, fronts that split the big binary — this is force-accounting, the analytic engine under the whole course.

LE RENVERSEMENT MÉDICAL — the course's terminal discovery, as a transplantable probe

The single most portable finding: how a war is pacified and where it resurfaces.

1. Expulsion by totalization — a Sieyès-move redefines the stake: victory stops meaning "dominate the adversary" and starts meaning "realize oneself / totalize the state" («non plus la domination mais la totalisation»; the nation that is «capables de nation», FR:2506). Struggle demotes to episode without ever being refuted. Watch for it wherever someone declares a conflict obsolete by re-describing success.
2. Le moment plein — both camps start reading the past from a saturated present (Montlosier: «on a décapité le roi, mais on a couronné la monarchie», FR:2644; Thierry's reconciled nation). Diagnostic: opposed politics, same grid = the grid has changed epochs. Track the SHARED grid of enemies, not the winner of theses.
3. Retour biologique — the expelled war returns as internal defense of the social body: «une guerre interne comme défense de la société contre les dangers qui naissent dans son propre corps… le grand renversement de l'historique au biologique, du constituant au médical» (FR:2470 env.). The title-sentence is the analyzed discourse's slogan at exactly this stage — «Nous avons à défendre la société contre tous les périls biologiques de cette autre race…» (FR:810). Probe: in your target domain, is conflict-vocabulary mutating into health/immunity/security/risk vocabulary? Who funds the immune system, and were they a belligerent?
4. La fonction de mort — a power that "makes live" can only kill by biologizing the enemy: racism «assure la fonction de mort dans l'économie du bio-pouvoir» (FR:2968); limit-case Nazi: «État raciste, État meurtrier, État suicidaire» (FR:2986); symmetric indictment of socialism wherever struggle (physical elimination of the class enemy) is central — flagged by Foucault himself as undischarged: «c'est pratiquer l'affirmation massue» (FR:3000). Keep his debt-flag when you transplant the claim.

L'ENTRETIEN HEBDOMADAIRE — the oral machine's standing maintenance (absent from the 1969 book-machine)

An inquiry conducted in public needs weekly modules; they surfaced in every lecture:

• Réparation de mésinterprétation — concede half a step, never the object: «Vous n'avez pas eu tout à fait tort, à ceci près…» (FR:845), then re-draw the object's boundary («Le problème que j'ai voulu poser est autre», FR:1050 env.). Object-restatement, not content-defense.
• Changement de cap à découvert — replan in front of the audience; cremate the dropped module with a one-line verdict and keep the ashes on record: répression promised in L1, wobbled at L2's end, dropped at L3's opening — «Mon projet – mais je l'abandonne tout de suite» (FR:646) — yet its one-sentence execution stands (répression = «une notion juridico-disciplinaire… vicié, gâté, pourri au départ», FR:613).
• Déclaration de dette argumentative — price unproven claims aloud instead of smuggling them: «affirmation massue… cela impliquerait une autre batterie de cours» (FR:3000). A public inquiry's credibility is carried by its ledger of open debts.

DEATH RECORD — where the mother-machine died

• Author's own exit: after 1976 Foucault keeps biopouvoir, drops war as master-analyzer, moves to gouvernementalité (received scholarship — novelty grade: known position). Reconstructable internal causes: (a) tension between the binary war-schema and his own microphysics precepts (capillary, ascending, plural — the L2 precautions cut against any grand binary); (b) the machine's own theorem turned on it — a war-discourse gets recaptured and recentered by power (the course's whole story), and a war-method has no immunity the discourse lacked.
• Known misuses: ① paranoid stencil — "everything is war" without first evidencing a pacification-narrative in place (no pacification on record → machine stays off); ② endpoint-word as analysis — "biopower!" pasted as label, when in this machine it is a derived terminus, never a starting move; ③ the title-trap — attributing to Foucault the discourse he reconstructs (the book's name is a specimen under glass, not a thesis); ④ perspectivism as relativist license — the machine demands concrete historicization of positions (who, when, against whom); "it's all perspective" is the machine idling.
• Handoff: once the who-fights-whom map is drawn, causal identification and quantitative interest-accounting belong to other tools. This machine stops at the map.

LE REÇU — receipt of one run

0. Pacification check — quote the peace/consensus/universality narrative you are about to cut into. No such narrative on record → do not run (anti-stencil clause).
1. Which really-existing war-discourse did you locate (who said it, when, from which trench)? If you invented it rather than found it, say so — the run downgrades to speculative.
2. Which theory did you X-ray as a strategic device, and what does it make impossible? (verbatim function-flip, Hobbes-style)
3. Which shared grammar did you show serving opposed camps? (reversibility evidence)
4. Where is the medical turn — conflict-vocabulary → health/security vocabulary — and who funds the immune system? («not found» is a legal answer and goes on record)
5. DELTA: which prior position did this run force you to surrender? None = the machine never bit — record that too.
6. Fracture check: can the domain's received narrative absorb your conclusion without strain? If yes, the run was decorative.

Provenance

• Built 2026-07-05 from the primary text (French, no translation layer), KL9 co-creating, main-context reading, no subagents. The centroid was confessed before reading (the pre-reading confession lives in the authors' local research tree, not shipped) — reception reads this course as transition-station to biopower, a failed war-experiment, and a quotable lecture 1 + lecture 11; this skill takes the layer those readings suppress: the wager conducted live, the weekly maintenance, the transfer-settlement.
• Convergence verdict (three scales, one gesture): no utterance without a position — statements become moves (syntax), combat-function replaces truth-value as measure (concepts), the author puts his own discourse on the battlefield (course arc: «c'est de ce discours de l'historicisme politique que je voudrais faire à la fois l'histoire et l'éloge», FR:1345 env.; the historicism avowal, FR:1983). • Genre note: apostle-opusmethodology n=3 (archaeology, taste-design lineage aside, this course). Form still provisional; the two Foucault machines are siblings, not clones — scalpel vs. IFF radar — and loading both on one task is usually one too many.
