webworker-file-access-enabling

Summary

Enable local file access for WebWorker and WebAssembly modules in desktop browsers by modifying browser-specific security policies. This skill is essential when running web applications locally (via file:// protocol) that depend on Web Workers or WebAssembly components, which are blocked by default cross-origin policies.

When to use

Apply this skill when you need to run a local HTML file that uses WebWorker or WebAssembly (such as COLMARvista for NMR spectra analysis) and the browser raises cross-origin or file-access policy errors preventing WebWorker initialization or WebAssembly module loading.

When NOT to use

  • When the web application is already served via HTTP/HTTPS from a web server (use http-server or equivalent instead of local file:// access)
  • When deploying to production or distributing to users (do not ask users to modify browser security settings for daily use)
  • When the application only uses standard JavaScript with no WebWorker or WebAssembly dependencies (no configuration needed)

Inputs

  • index.html file (local file path via file:// protocol)
  • WebWorker JavaScript module(s)
  • WebAssembly binary module(s)
  • Browser executable or configuration interface

Outputs

  • Browser process with relaxed file-access policy
  • Successful WebWorker thread initialization
  • Successful WebAssembly module loading and execution
  • Rendered web application in browser viewport

How to apply

Identify which browser you are using (Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Safari) and apply the corresponding configuration change: (1) For Chrome, add the --allow-file-access-from-files flag to the executable target in the application shortcut properties and restart the browser. (2) For Firefox, navigate to about:config, search for security.fileuri.strict_origin_policy, and set it to false. (3) For Safari, enable 'Show Develop menu in menu bar' in Advanced settings, then click Develop menu and select 'Disable Local File Restrictions.' After configuration, load index.html locally and verify that WebWorker and WebAssembly components initialize without errors. Note that these modifications reduce browser security; only use them with trusted local files.

Related tools

  • Google Chrome (Desktop browser requiring --allow-file-access-from-files flag addition to executable target to permit local WebWorker and WebAssembly execution)
  • Mozilla Firefox (Desktop browser requiring security.fileuri.strict_origin_policy set to false in about:config to allow local resource sharing for WebWorker and WebAssembly)
  • Safari (Desktop browser requiring 'Disable Local File Restrictions' option enabled via Develop menu to permit local WebWorker and WebAssembly loading)
  • WebWorker (JavaScript API for multi-threaded background execution; cannot load automatically under default file-access policies when running locally)
  • WebAssembly (Binary module format for high-performance computation; cannot load automatically under default file-access policies when running locally)
  • COLMARvista (Reference web-based NMR spectra viewer application that uses WebWorker and WebAssembly and requires local file-access configuration to run offline) — https://github.com/lidawei1975/colmarvista

Evaluation signals

  • Browser loads index.html without throwing cross-origin or file-access policy errors in the console
  • WebWorker threads initialize and log expected startup messages without rejection
  • WebAssembly module loads and functions execute without instantiation errors
  • Application renders correctly and interactive features (e.g., file upload, data visualization) respond to user input
  • No security warnings or blocked resource indicators appear in the browser's developer tools or status bar

Limitations

  • Modifying browser security settings poses a security risk; these changes should only be applied to trusted local files and reverted after use
  • The --allow-file-access-from-files flag in Chrome applies globally to all local file access, not just the target application
  • Safari's 'Disable Local File Restrictions' must be re-enabled manually after use; the setting does not persist automatically
  • These configurations are per-user and per-machine; end users distributing applications should rely on HTTP serving (e.g., npm start with http-server) rather than asking users to modify browser settings

Evidence

  • [readme] This program uses WebWorker and WebAssembly, which cannot be loaded automatically when run locally unless you modify your browser settings.: "This program uses WebWorker and WebAssembly, which cannot be loaded automatically when run locally unless you modify your browser settings."
  • [readme] For Google Chrome: add the --allow-file-access-from-files flag to the executable target path: "In the "Target" field, add the following flag to the end of the existing path: --allow-file-access-from-files."
  • [readme] For Firefox, set security.fileuri.strict_origin_policy to false in about:config: "Search for security.fileuri.strict_origin_policy in the configuration page. Change its value to false."
  • [readme] For Safari, enable 'Disable Local File Restrictions' via the Develop menu: "In the menu bar, click "Develop" and select "Disable Local File Restrictions.""
  • [intro] Verify configuration by loading index.html locally and confirming WebWorker and WebAssembly components initialize without cross-origin or file-access policy errors: "Verify each configuration by loading index.html locally and confirming WebWorker and WebAssembly components initialize without cross-origin or file-access policy errors."
  • [readme] Security risk warning: Do not load any local files unless you are certain they are safe: "Warning: Modifying these settings poses a security risk. Do not load any local files unless you are certain they are safe."
