Summary

Navigate and modify browser-specific developer settings to enable local file access for WebWorker and WebAssembly execution. This skill is essential when deploying local instances of web applications that rely on these technologies but are blocked by default cross-origin policies.

When to use

You are attempting to run a web application (such as COLMARvista) locally by opening index.html directly in a browser, the application uses WebWorker and/or WebAssembly components, and these fail to load due to default file-access policies. The symptom is cross-origin or file-access policy errors when loading the local index.html.

When NOT to use

  • The application is already being served over HTTP/HTTPS (a web server); local file-access configuration is unnecessary and introduces security risk.
  • The application does not use WebWorker or WebAssembly; the skill is irrelevant to purely HTML/CSS/JavaScript applications.
  • You are in a production or shared-machine environment where modifying browser security settings is prohibited or poses unacceptable risk.

Inputs

  • local file:// path to index.html
  • web application using WebWorker and/or WebAssembly modules
  • browser executable (Chrome, Firefox, or Safari)

Outputs

  • modified browser configuration (flag, about:config setting, or menu option)
  • verified local execution of WebWorker and WebAssembly components without policy errors

How to apply

Identify which browser you are using (Chrome, Firefox, or Safari), then navigate to the appropriate browser settings location and modify the security policy that restricts local file access. For Chrome, add the --allow-file-access-from-files flag to the executable target path via Properties. For Firefox, navigate to about:config and set security.fileuri.strict_origin_policy to false. For Safari, enable the Develop menu in Advanced settings, then select 'Disable Local File Restrictions' from the Develop menu. After each configuration change, restart the browser and verify that loading index.html locally completes without cross-origin or file-access errors. The rationale is that each browser enforces distinct security sandboxes for local file:// URIs; each requires a distinct configuration mechanism to permit WebWorker and WebAssembly module loading from local sources.

Related tools

  • Google Chrome (target browser requiring --allow-file-access-from-files flag addition to executable properties for local WebWorker/WebAssembly loading)
  • Mozilla Firefox (target browser requiring security.fileuri.strict_origin_policy configuration change in about:config for local WebWorker/WebAssembly loading)
  • Safari (target browser requiring 'Disable Local File Restrictions' setting via Develop menu for local WebWorker/WebAssembly loading)
  • WebWorker (web technology component in COLMARvista that requires local file-access policy modification when running from local index.html)
  • WebAssembly (web technology component in COLMARvista that requires local file-access policy modification when running from local index.html)

Evaluation signals

  • index.html loads successfully in the browser without 'cross-origin' or 'file-access policy' error messages in the console
  • WebWorker threads initialize and begin processing without ERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND or CORS-related errors
  • WebAssembly modules load and instantiate without ERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND or file-access restriction errors
  • Application functionality that depends on WebWorker or WebAssembly (e.g., NMR spectrum parsing and rendering in COLMARvista) executes without blocking or errors
  • Browser's developer console (F12) shows no security-related warnings or errors related to file:// URI access

Limitations

  • Modifying browser security settings poses a security risk; the README warns 'Do not load any local files unless you are certain they are safe.' These settings should only be modified in development environments, not for general web browsing.
  • Configuration changes are browser-specific and must be applied separately for each browser; they do not transfer between browsers or machines.
  • The --allow-file-access-from-files flag in Chrome affects all local file loading for that browser instance, creating a broader security exposure than necessary for a single application.
  • Safari's 'Disable Local File Restrictions' is a global setting affecting all local file access, not scoped to individual applications or domains.
