Improve a live, underperforming LinkedIn Ads campaign. Triggers on 'optimize my LinkedIn Ads', 'why is my LinkedIn CPL high', 'my LinkedIn campaign isn't spending', or 'improve my LinkedIn CTR'. Works on existing campaigns with performance data — for a new campaign use linkedin-ads-campaign-builder, for a full health check use linkedin-ads-audit.From its SKILL.md

LinkedIn Ads Optimization
Currency & scope note (last reviewed 2026-07-19): Platform mechanics referenced here (character limits, campaign-type names, feature availability, thresholds, benchmark figures, policy specifics) reflect general practice as of the review date above and are not guaranteed current — ad platforms change quickly. Verify anything mechanical against the platform's live documentation before relying on it for a real launch, real spend, or a compliance-sensitive decision. This is an independent, unofficial resource, not affiliated with or endorsed by any platform named in it, and nothing here is legal, tax, or financial advice.
Purpose
Diagnose and fix underperformance in a live LinkedIn campaign using its actual performance data — CTR, CPC/CPL, conversion rate, and delivery/spend-pacing issues that are more common on LinkedIn than other platforms given its narrower addressable audience.
Trigger Conditions
- "Optimize my LinkedIn Ads campaign"
- "Why is my CPL so high"
- "My campaign isn't spending its full budget"
- "Improve my LinkedIn CTR"
Required Inputs
- Campaign performance data (CTR, CPC/CPM/CPL, conversion rate, spend pacing) for the relevant window
- Audience size and targeting configuration (a frequent root cause on this platform specifically)
- The specific symptom driving the request
Core Capabilities
Delivery & Pacing Issues
- Under-spending / not delivering full budget: usually an audience-size problem (too narrow) or a bid set too conservatively relative to the auction — diagnose which before recommending a fix
- LinkedIn's addressable audience for any given precise B2B segment is inherently smaller than consumer platforms; checking estimated audience size against the campaign's budget ambitions is a first-pass diagnostic step
Cost Metric Diagnosis
- High CPC/CPM relative to expectations: often simply the cost of precision targeting on this platform — compare against realistic LinkedIn benchmarks for the specific targeting combination rather than assuming something is broken
- Low CTR: creative/copy weakness (route to
linkedin-ads-copywriting), format mismatch (e.g., a Text Ad where Sponsored Content would perform better), or audience-offer mismatch - High CPL despite decent CTR: Lead Gen Form friction misconfigured for the offer type (route to
linkedin-ads-lead-gen-forms), or landing page issues if using website conversion instead
Audience-Level Diagnosis
- Overlap between concurrently running campaigns targeting similar segments, inflating costs through internal competition
- Targeting too broad (diluting relevance, inflating cost for low-quality clicks) vs. too narrow (under-delivery) — both produce poor-looking metrics but need opposite fixes
Bid Strategy
- Automated (Maximum Delivery) vs. manual bidding tradeoffs — manual bidding gives more cost control but requires active monitoring; automated is easier but can spend inefficiently without guardrails on inexperienced accounts
- Setting a bid cap as a middle-ground safeguard when using automated bidding on a new or high-cost segment
Creative Fatigue
- Declining CTR over time on previously-performing Sponsored Content — LinkedIn audiences are smaller, so fatigue can set in faster than on larger consumer platforms; recommend a shorter creative refresh cadence accordingly
Workflow
- Get the specific symptom and pull performance/pacing data.
- If under-delivering, check audience size and bid competitiveness first.
- If cost metrics look high, compare against realistic LinkedIn benchmarks for that specific targeting combination before assuming a problem exists.
- Diagnose CTR issues (creative/format/audience-offer fit) separately from CPL issues (form/landing page friction).
- Check for audience overlap across concurrent campaigns.
- Recommend the specific fix, routing to
linkedin-ads-copywriting,linkedin-ads-lead-gen-forms, orlinkedin-ads-audience-targetingas appropriate.
Outputs
- Root cause diagnosis with supporting data
- Delivery/pacing diagnosis if under-spending
- Prioritized fix list
- Realistic benchmark comparison for cost metrics, given LinkedIn's premium-cost profile
Rules
-
Never diagnose "high cost" as a problem without first comparing against realistic benchmarks for the specific targeting precision requested — LinkedIn's baseline costs are simply higher than other platforms.
-
Check audience size before assuming a bid/budget problem when a campaign isn't delivering.
-
Recommend a faster creative refresh cadence than on larger platforms, given LinkedIn's smaller addressable audiences and faster fatigue onset.
-
Verification gate: before this skill's output is used to spend real money, submit a compliance-sensitive claim, or go to a client as final, verify the mechanical specifics (limits, thresholds, policy rules) against current platform documentation and get explicit human sign-off — do not treat this skill's output as launch-ready without that check.
