Context: The Client-Side Rendering Problem
Standard AEM Edge Delivery Services pages are pre-rendered as static HTML — search engines crawl and index them without JavaScript. Commerce product pages are fundamentally different. The browser loads a template page containing the product-details block declaration but no actual product data. The PDP block's JavaScript then extracts the product identifier from the URL, queries the Catalog Service GraphQL API, and renders the product data (name, price, description, images) into the DOM using dropin components.
The problem: search engine crawlers may not execute the JavaScript, or may not wait long enough for the API call to complete. Googlebot renders JavaScript but with a delay (days to weeks after initial crawl) and resource limits. Other crawlers (Bing, social media previews, AI bots) may not execute JavaScript at all. This creates a gap between what humans see (a fully rendered product page) and what crawlers see (a mostly empty template). EDS's built-in indexing (query-index.xlsx) also only indexes authored document content — product data added dynamically is invisible to the EDS query index.
Step 0: Create Todo List
Before starting, create a checklist to track progress:
- Fetch product pages and identify initial HTML vs. JS-rendered content
- Audit meta tags (title, description, og:tags) for product-specific content
- Validate Product schema.org structured data (JSON-LD)
- Check canonical URLs for product pages
- Audit robots.txt and sitemap coverage for product URLs
- Assess image SEO (alt text, dimensions, loading priority)
- Evaluate crawlability strategies and recommend fixes
- Generate optimization report
Step 1: Fetch and Analyze Product Pages
Fetch at least 3 product pages from the storefront — one simple product, one configurable product (if applicable), and one from a different category.
For each page, fetch two versions:
- Full page with JavaScript — the URL as a browser would render it. Note: most fetch tools do NOT execute JavaScript. If you cannot execute JS, document what the initial HTML contains and infer what JS adds based on the PDP block pattern.
- Raw HTML response — use
curlor equivalent to fetch the raw HTML without JavaScript execution. This is what a non-JS crawler sees.
For each page, document:

If the initial HTML contains none of the product-specific content, this is a P0 crawlability risk.
Step 2: Audit Meta Tags
Check the <head> of each product page for product-specific meta tags.
Title Tag
- Must contain the product name. A generic title like "Product | Site Name" without the actual product name is P0.
- Ideal format:
{Product Name} | {Brand/Site Name}— 50-60 characters. - Check if set statically or dynamically. If the
<title>in the raw HTML is a generic template title and only updates after JavaScript runs, it may not be indexed with the product name. Flag as P0.
Meta Description
- Must contain product-specific information. Include product name, key feature, and price or price range.
- Length: 150-160 characters.
- If set dynamically: Same risk as title — may not be visible to crawlers. Flag as P1.
Open Graph Tags
og:title— Should match or closely relate to the product name.og:description— Should summarize the product.og:image— Should be the primary product image URL. Missing og:image means no preview when shared on social media. P1.og:type— Should beproductfor product pages. P2 if missing.og:url— Should match the canonical URL.
Strategy for Dynamic Meta Tags
If meta tags are set only via JavaScript, recommend one of these approaches:
- Pre-populate from catalog data at build time — Use an EDS metadata spreadsheet or a build-time script to set product-specific meta tags in
head.htmlbased on URL patterns. - Edge-side injection — Use a Cloudflare Worker or similar edge function to inject product meta tags into the HTML response before it reaches the crawler.
- Metadata mapping in configs.xlsx — Some EDS commerce setups support mapping product metadata to page-level metadata. Check if this is configured.
Step 3: Validate Structured Data
Product pages should include Product schema.org structured data in JSON-LD format for rich result eligibility.

Validation Checks
- Is JSON-LD present? Check for
<script type="application/ld+json">in the page source. If absent, this is P0. - Is it in the initial HTML or injected by JS? If injected by JS, it may not be visible to crawlers that do not render JavaScript. Flag as P1.
- Are required properties populated? Missing
name,image, oroffersmeans no rich result eligibility. P0. - Is the price accurate? Compare the structured data price to the price displayed on the page. Mismatches violate Google's structured data policies. P0.
- Is availability accurate? An out-of-stock product marked
InStockin structured data is a policy violation. P0.
Implementation Guidance for EDS
The recommended approach is to inject JSON-LD in the PDP block's JavaScript (product-details.js) after product data loads: build a schema object with @context, @type: Product, name, image, description, sku, and an offers object with price, priceCurrency, and availability. Create a <script type="application/ld+json"> element and append it to document.head. Note: this approach relies on JavaScript execution. For maximum crawlability, also implement server-side or edge-side injection of the same structured data.
Step 4: Check Canonical URLs
Product pages must have correct canonical URLs to avoid duplicate content issues.
Checks
- Canonical tag exists —
<link rel="canonical" href="...">must be in the<head>. Missing canonical is P0. - Canonical points to the storefront URL — The canonical must be the EDS storefront URL (e.g.,
https://store.example.com/products/blue-jacket), not the Commerce admin URL or the.aem.livepreview URL. - Canonical is consistent — The same product accessed via different paths (e.g., from different category breadcrumbs) must have the same canonical URL.
- No self-referencing issues — The canonical URL should exactly match the page URL, including trailing slash handling (EDS uses no trailing slash).
- HTTP vs HTTPS — Canonical must use HTTPS. An HTTP canonical is P0.
Common Issues
- Preview domain in canonical — If the canonical points to
main--repo--org.aem.pageinstead of the production domain, search engines will index the preview URL. P0. - Dynamic canonical — If the canonical is set by JavaScript after page load, crawlers may see the template's canonical instead of the product-specific one. P1.
- URL parameters — Product variant URLs with query parameters (e.g.,
?color=blue) should canonicalize to the base product URL unless variants have separate pages. P1.
Step 5: Audit Robots.txt and Sitemap Coverage
Robots.txt
Fetch robots.txt from the site root. Check:
- Product paths are not blocked — Ensure
/products/and/categories/(or whatever URL pattern the storefront uses) are not in aDisallowdirective. Blocked product paths is P0. - Catalog Service API is not blocked — Some robots.txt files accidentally block the API domain. While the API is on a different domain, verify no overly broad rules apply.
- Sitemap is declared —
robots.txtshould contain aSitemap:directive pointing to the product sitemap.
Sitemap
Fetch the sitemap(s) declared in robots.txt. Check:
- Product pages are included — Each product's canonical URL should appear in the sitemap. Missing product URLs means crawlers may not discover them. P0.
- Sitemap is current — Check
<lastmod>dates. If the sitemap has not been updated in months but the catalog changes frequently, product URLs may be stale. P1. - Sitemap size — A single sitemap file cannot exceed 50,000 URLs or 50MB. Large catalogs need a sitemap index file. P1 if limits are exceeded.
- Dynamic sitemap generation — EDS does not automatically generate sitemaps for commerce product pages (since they are route-based, not document-based). Verify that a custom sitemap generation mechanism exists — typically a script that queries the catalog and outputs product URLs.
Step 6: Audit Image SEO
Product images are critical for Google Shopping, image search, and visual search.
Checks
- Alt text on product images — Every
<img>for a product photo must have descriptive alt text containing the product name. Alt text like "product image" or "IMG_001" is P1. - Alt text set dynamically — If the PDP block sets image alt text from catalog data, verify the alt text quality in the Catalog Service response. Empty or generic alt text from the API means every product page inherits the problem. P1.
- Image dimensions — Product images should have
widthandheightattributes to prevent CLS. Missing dimensions is P1. - LCP image loading — The primary product image is typically the LCP element. It must NOT have
loading="lazy". It should havefetchpriority="high". Lazy-loading the LCP product image is P0. - Image format — EDS serves optimized WebP via its CDN, but verify the Commerce media images are also served in modern formats. P2 if only JPEG/PNG.
- Image file names — Product image URLs from Commerce often have hashed filenames (e.g.,
/media/catalog/product/cache/abc123.jpg). These carry no SEO value. Consider using descriptive image URLs if the Commerce setup supports it. P3.
Step 7: Evaluate Crawlability Strategies
Based on the findings from Steps 1-6, recommend a crawlability strategy. Rate the current state and suggest improvements:
Strategy Tiers
Tier 1: JavaScript-Dependent (Current default for most EDS commerce sites) — All product content rendered by JS. Relies on Googlebot's JavaScript rendering (days/weeks delay). Other crawlers see empty pages. Risk: High. Acceptable only for small catalogs with low search traffic requirements.
Tier 2: Hybrid (Recommended minimum) — Critical meta tags (<title>, <meta description>, canonical, og:tags) pre-populated in the HTML response. JSON-LD structured data injected server-side or at the edge. Product body content still rendered by JS. Risk: Medium. Search engines get enough signals for indexing even without full JS execution.
Tier 3: Pre-Rendered (Recommended for large catalogs) — Edge worker or build-time process pre-renders critical product HTML (name, price, description, primary image) in the initial response. JS enhances the page (interactivity, gallery, add-to-cart) but is not required for content. Risk: Low. All crawlers see product content immediately.
Recommend the appropriate tier based on the site's catalog size, search traffic importance, and technical capabilities.
Step 8: Generate Optimization Report

Key Principles
- Assume crawlers do not execute JavaScript. Design for the worst case. Every critical SEO signal (title, description, structured data, canonical) should be in the initial HTML response.
- Structured data must match displayed content. If the JSON-LD says a product costs $29.99 but the page shows $34.99 (due to caching or currency issues), Google may penalize the page or remove rich results.
- Product pages need explicit sitemap inclusion. EDS does not auto-generate sitemaps for route-based pages. Without a sitemap, crawlers must discover product pages via internal links alone.
- The initial HTML is the crawlability contract. What is in the raw HTML response is guaranteed to be indexed. What JavaScript adds is aspirational.
- Test with Google's tools, not just a browser. Use Google's URL Inspection tool (in Search Console) and the Rich Results Test to see exactly what Googlebot sees. A page that looks perfect in Chrome may look empty to Googlebot's renderer.
- Monitor indexing continuously. Search Console's Index Coverage report shows how many product pages are indexed versus discovered. A growing gap between discovered and indexed pages indicates a crawlability problem.
