Experiment Designer for AEM Edge Delivery Services
Design, configure, and validate A/B tests and multivariate experiments using the AEM Edge Delivery Services built-in experimentation framework. Translates business hypotheses into properly configured experiments, ensures metadata is correctly structured, validates that variant pages are accessible, calculates required sample sizes for statistical significance, and produces experiment brief documents that teams can execute against.

Context
How EDS Experimentation Works
EDS has a built-in experimentation framework that runs at the CDN edge layer. When a user requests a page with an active experiment, the CDN randomly assigns the user to a variant based on the configured traffic split. The assignment happens before HTML is served — the user receives the variant page directly, with no client-side JavaScript redirect or DOM manipulation. This means experiments have zero performance overhead.
Configuration Methods
Experiments are configured in two ways: (1) Page-level metadata — an "Experiment" metadata field in the page document with variant URLs and traffic splits; or (2) Experiments spreadsheet — a centralized /experiments spreadsheet for sites running multiple experiments, supporting start/end dates and audience targeting.
What Gets Tracked
OpTel automatically tracks which variant each sampled user sees and records standard metrics (page views, CWV, engagement) per variant. Results appear in OpTel Explorer under the "Experiments" view with statistical significance indicators.
Limitations
EDS experimentation is page-level — you swap entire pages, not individual elements. To test a single button color, create a full variant page identical to the control except for the button. For element-level personalization, use Adobe Target with WebSDK.
Step 0: Create Todo List
Before starting, create a checklist of all steps to track progress:
- Define the experiment hypothesis and success metrics
- Design control and variant pages
- Configure experiment metadata
- Set traffic split percentages
- Validate configuration and variant accessibility
- Calculate sample size and experiment duration
- Generate the experiment brief document
- Define the monitoring and decision plan
Step 1: Define the Experiment Hypothesis
Work with the user to define:
- Hypothesis statement: "We believe that [change] will [effect] because [rationale]."
- Primary metric: The single metric that determines success (e.g., conversion rate, CTR, bounce rate, time-on-page).
- Secondary metrics: Additional metrics to monitor for unintended effects. Always include CWV to ensure variants do not degrade performance.
- Minimum detectable effect (MDE): The smallest meaningful change in the primary metric. Smaller MDEs require larger samples and longer durations.
Step 2: Design Variants
Control
The current live page. Document its URL: https://<branch>--<repo>--<owner>.aem.live/<page-path>
Variants
For each variant, define the name, URL, and precise description of what differs. Variant pages in EDS are typically stored as /page-name/variant-b or /experiments/experiment-name/variant-b.
For multivariate tests, define the variable matrix. Example: 2 headlines x 3 CTA colors = 6 combinations, each needing its own variant page. Note that multivariate tests require significantly more traffic to reach significance.
Step 3: Configure Experiment Metadata
Method 1: Page-Level Metadata (Simple A/B Test)
Add metadata to the control page's document (the table at the bottom of the Google Doc or SharePoint document):

The first split value is the control, followed by each variant. Values must sum to 100.
Method 2: Experiments Spreadsheet (Multiple Experiments)
Create or update the /experiments.json spreadsheet:

The Audience column supports: all, mobile, desktop, new, returning, or custom definitions.
Configuration Rules
- Variant URLs must be published, accessible EDS pages.
- Experiment names must be URL-safe slugs (lowercase, hyphens, no spaces).
- Traffic splits must sum to exactly 100.
- Dates use ISO 8601 format (YYYY-MM-DD).
- Only one experiment can be active per page at a time.
Step 4: Set Traffic Split Percentages
- 50/50: Maximum statistical power. Standard for most A/B tests.
- 80/20: Conservative. Use when the variant is risky (major redesign) and you want to limit exposure.
- 90/10: Exploratory. Initial validation before committing more traffic.
- Equal splits for MVT: For 4 variants, use 25/25/25/25.
Never allocate less than 10% to any variant — the sample will be too small. For high-traffic pages (10,000+ daily views), even 90/10 provides data within 1-2 weeks. For low-traffic pages (under 1,000 daily views), use 50/50.
Step 5: Validate Experiment Configuration
Variant Accessibility
Confirm each variant page loads:

Expected: HTTP 200. A 404 means the variant is not published.

Verify experiment metadata is present in the published page:

Content and Performance Parity
Variant pages must have the same structure as the control except for intended changes, include all required metadata (title, description, og:image), and pass CWV standards. Run cwv-optimizer on each variant. Confirm split percentages sum to 100 and no conflicting experiments target the same page.
Step 6: Calculate Sample Size and Duration
For a two-variant A/B test with 95% confidence and 80% power:
n per variant = 16 * p * (1-p) / (MDE)^2
Where p is baseline conversion rate and MDE is the absolute difference to detect.
Example: Baseline 3.2%, MDE 0.32% absolute (10% relative): n = 16 * 0.032 * 0.968 / 0.0032^2 = 48,400 per variant. With 50/50 split on 2,000 daily views, the experiment needs ~49 days.
Duration rules: minimum 7 days (capture day-of-week effects), maximum 90 days (if no significance by then, the effect is too small to matter). Never stop early because one variant "looks better" — peeking inflates false positives.
Step 7: Generate Experiment Brief
Produce a structured document:

Decision Criteria: Winner if primary metric improves by >= MDE with p < 0.05. No winner if significance not reached after planned duration. Stop early if any variant degrades CWV to "poor" or bounce rate increases > 20%.
Step 8: Define Monitoring and Decision Plan
During the Experiment
- Check OpTel daily for the first 3 days to catch config errors (zero variant traffic = bad config).
- Monitor CWV per variant — performance degradation confounds results.
- Do not change control or variant pages during the run. Do not peek and make early decisions.
After the Experiment
- Export results from OpTel Experiments view.
- Check significance for the primary metric. Review secondary metrics for side effects.
- If a variant wins: publish it as the new page and archive the old version.
- If no winner: document learnings and design the next experiment.
Common Pitfalls
- Novelty effect: New designs perform better initially because they are new. Run at least 2 weeks.
- Simpson's paradox: Check results by device type separately — aggregate may hide segment differences.
- Multiple comparisons: For 3+ variants, apply Bonferroni correction (divide alpha by comparison count).
Troubleshooting

Key Principles
- One experiment, one hypothesis. Do not test multiple unrelated changes simultaneously — you cannot attribute results to either change independently.
- Edge-level means zero performance cost. No JavaScript overhead, no flash of original content, no layout shift from variant swapping. A major advantage over client-side tools.
- Statistical rigor is non-negotiable. Calculate sample sizes before launching. Do not peek and stop early. Do not declare winners without significance.
- Variant pages are real pages. They must be maintained. If you update the control during an experiment, update variants too.
- Document everything. The experiment brief prevents misremembered hypotheses, cherry-picked metrics, and indefinite experiments.
