2 things to look at

  • 19 days oldThe repository was created 19 days ago. New is not bad, but a brand new repository carrying a familiar-sounding name is the shape a typosquat arrives in, and there has been no time for anyone else to find a problem with it.
  • 3 stars3 stars. Stars are a popularity signal and not a quality one, but at this level it is likely that nobody has read this closely except its author, and you would be relying on your own review.

What its author says it does

Copied from the file, not written here

Generate a 5-column gap analysis mapping the transition from current state to desired future state across business dimensions with actionable steps.

The file declares its own license as MIT. That is the author’s claim about this one file, and it is not the same thing as the license GitHub reports for the repository, which is listed with the other numbers below.

Gap Analysis

What This Template Does

A structured framework for mapping the distance between where a business is today and where it wants to be. Break the transition into dimensions, then for each one lay out the current state, the desired future state, the gap between them, and the action to close it.

When to Use This

  • Business model transitions: Moving from services to product, single-tenant to SaaS, regional to global
  • Strategic planning: Turn a high-level vision into concrete, owned actions
  • Operational readiness: Assess whether team, tech, and process can support the next stage
  • Fundraising / board prep: Show a credible path from current metrics to target metrics
  • Post-mortem on stalled goals: Surface which gaps were never actioned

What It Generates

A 5-column table where each row is one dimension of the business (Team, Product, Go-to-market, etc.), read left to right:

  • Dimension — the area being assessed
  • Current State — where you are today
  • Future State — where you want to be
  • Gap — what's missing or must change
  • Action — the concrete step to close the gap

User Prompt

Perform a gap analysis for a [Business Type/Industry] transitioning from [Current State/Model] to [Desired Future State/Model].

Fill-in variables:

  • [Business Type/Industry] — the business being analyzed (e.g., "B2B SaaS startup," "regional coffee chain," "digital marketing agency")
  • [Current State/Model] — where the business is today (e.g., "a founder-led services model," "a single-tenant MVP," "in-store-only retail")
  • [Desired Future State/Model] — the target you're transitioning toward (e.g., "a self-serve product company," "a multi-tenant SaaS platform," "omnichannel retail")

Example:

Perform a gap analysis for a B2B SaaS startup transitioning from a founder-led services model to a self-serve multi-tenant product company.

Structure v1 (Current Live)

Canvas type: Table with 5 columns, one row per dimension

ColumnTypeContents
DimensionFree textThe area of the business being assessed (e.g., Team, Product, Go-to-market)
Current StateFree textWhere the business stands today for this dimension
Future StateFree textThe desired target state for this dimension
GapFree textWhat's missing or must change to get there
ActionFree textThe concrete, ideally time-boxed step to close the gap

Row interpretation:

  • Each row = one dimension (Team, Product, Technology/AI, Operations, Go-to-market, etc.)
  • Columns flow left-to-right: what it is → where you are → where you want to be → what's missing → what to do

Example Use Case

Scenario: A B2B SaaS startup wants to move from a founder-led services business to a self-serve, multi-tenant product company.

Prompt:

Perform a gap analysis for a B2B SaaS startup transitioning from a founder-led services model to a self-serve multi-tenant product company.

Output (v1 structure):

DimensionCurrent StateFuture StateGapAction
Team5 engineers, founder-led20 engineers + PM + design15 hires; no product or design functionHire eng lead + recruiter in Q1
ProductSingle-tenant MVPMulti-tenant SaaS platformNo SSO, billing, or RBACBuild enterprise-tier roadmap; ship SSO + billing next two quarters
Go-to-marketFounder sells directDedicated sales team + partnersNo repeatable sales motionHire 3 AEs and define a sales playbook
Revenue ModelOne-off project feesRecurring subscriptionsNo subscription billing or contractsIntegrate a billing provider; move clients to annual plans

Insight: The biggest gaps are structural — the team lacks product/design roles and the revenue model isn't recurring yet. Sequencing the hires and billing integration first unblocks the rest of the transition.

Tips for Effective Analysis

  1. Be honest about the current state: The gap is only as useful as the baseline is accurate. Resist the urge to describe where you're "almost" at.
  2. Make the future state concrete: "Better product" is not a target. "Multi-tenant platform with SSO and usage-based billing" is.
  3. Keep Gap and Action distinct: The Gap names the deficit; the Action names the move. Don't collapse them.
  4. Pick 3–7 dimensions: Enough to be complete, few enough to stay focused. Common sets: Team, Product, Technology, Operations, Go-to-market, Revenue Model.
  5. Time-box actions: An action with an owner and a quarter is executable; a vague "improve X" is not.
  6. Revisit as you execute: Update the Current State as actions complete — the canvas becomes a living progress tracker.

Adaptation Ideas

This structure works for any current → future transition:

  • Career / skills planning: Dimensions become skill areas; current vs target competency
  • Product maturity: Dimensions become product areas; current vs desired capability
  • Team capability audit: Assess process, tooling, and skills against a target operating model
  • Migration planning: Current stack vs target stack, with gaps and migration steps per component

Fork the user prompt and adjust the business type + current/future models to fit your context.

About Flowacts

Flowacts is an AI-powered collaborative workspace for structured thinking — strategy canvases, gap analyses, project plans, and decision frameworks that teams build and iterate together. These templates are the prompts that generate the structure; the real experience is in the live app, where the canvas is editable, collaborative, and interactive.

Questions or Issues?

  • Template not generating expected structure? → Check that your Flowacts version matches the v1 spec, or describe the difference so we can help troubleshoot
  • Rows not breaking out by dimension? → Refine the prompt to name the dimensions explicitly (e.g., "...across team, product, go-to-market, and revenue model")
  • Need a related template? → Open an issue describing the framework (we may have it or can help structure it)
