Tone Classification Logic

To satisfy the requirements of regulated verse using modern Mandarin pronunciation, map the four Pinyin tones as follows:

  1. Level Tones (平 - Píng):

    • First Tone (1 / ˉ): e.g., mā, tiān, pínɡ. (阴平)
    • Second Tone (2 / ˊ): e.g., má, hén, nán. (阳平)
  2. Oblique Tones (仄 - Zè):

    • Third Tone (3 / ˇ): e.g., mǎ, gǔ, hǎo. (上声)
    • Fourth Tone (4 / ˋ): e.g., mà, lù, zhàn. (去声)

Application in Verse

  • When a template requires 平, the character chosen must have a 1st or 2nd tone.
  • When a template requires 仄, the character chosen must have a 3rd or 4th tone.
  • Rhyme Rule: In regulated verse, the rhyming characters at the end of even lines must almost always be Level (平) tones.
