1. Basic Structure

  • Length: 8 lines in total, with exactly 7 characters per line (56 characters total).
  • Couplets: The poem consists of four couplets:
    1. 首联 (Shǒulián): Lines 1-2.
    2. 颔联 (Hànlián): Lines 3-4. Must be antithetical (parallelism in grammar and meaning).
    3. 颈联 (Jǐnglián): Lines 5-6. Must be antithetical (parallelism in grammar and meaning).
    4. 尾联 (Wěilián): Lines 7-8.

2. Tonal Pattern (Ping/Ze)

Every character must follow a specific pattern of Level (平 - Píng) and Oblique (仄 - Zè) tones. Use the following Mandarin mapping:

  • Level (平): 1st tone (阴平) and 2nd tone (阳平).
  • Oblique (仄): 3rd tone (上声) and 4th tone (去声).

3. Structural Templates

Select one of the following four standard patterns. (Parentheses () indicate positions where the tone is flexible, though adhering to the pattern is safer).

Pattern A: 平起首句入韵 (Level start, rhyming first line)

4. Rhyme Scheme

  • The rhyme falls on the last character of lines 2, 4, 6, and 8.
  • For Seven-Character verse, the last character of line 1 usually also rhymes.
  • All rhyming characters must belong to the same rhyme group and must be Level (平) tones in modern Mandarin.

5. Verification Step

Before finalizing, create a 7x8 grid of the tones of your chosen characters and compare it against the selected template to ensure 100% compliance.
