Classical Chinese Poetry: War Suffering and Peace Longing

Thematic Arc for 律诗 on War/Peace

Structure the 4 couplets as a narrative arc:

  1. 首联 (Lines 1-2) — Macroscopic Setting: Wide-angle view of war

    • Use large-scale imagery: sky, mountains, frontier passes
    • Establish the atmosphere of widespread conflict
  2. 颔联 (Lines 3-4) — Human Suffering: Zoom in to ordinary people

    • Specific family members: old man, young child, woman
    • Concrete actions: sending off, crying, asking
    • This is the emotional heart of the poem
  3. 颈联 (Lines 5-6) — Physical Destruction: The war's aftermath

    • Ruined buildings, scorched fields, unburied dead
    • Transition from living people to dead landscape
  4. 尾联 (Lines 7-8) — Wish for Peace: Closing hope

    • Classical formula: wish weapons stored, four seas at peace
    • Shift from sorrow to aspiration

Verified Imagery Vocabulary

War Setting (Lines 1-2)

ImageCharactersMeaning
Beacon fires烽火连天fires connecting sky = widespread war
Frontier pass出塞going beyond the Great Wall
Battle dress战衣寒cold battle garments (sensory detail)
Mountain obscured蔽岭山/遮远山smoke hiding mountains

Human Suffering (Lines 3-4) — for parallel couplet

Best contrasting subject pairs:

  • 老翁 (old man) ↔ 稚女 (young girl) — generation contrast
  • 老母 (old mother) ↔ 孤儿 (orphan) — family loss
  • 白发翁 (white-haired elder) ↔ 黄口儿 (young child)

Best action pairs for parallel:

  • 挥泪 (wave away tears) ↔ 含悲 (hold grief within)
  • 送儿去 (send son away) ↔ 问父难 (ask about father's hardship)

Destruction (Lines 5-6) — for parallel couplet

Best subject pairs:

  • 田舍 (farmhouse) ↔ 征魂 (soldier's soul)
  • 村落 (village) ↔ 征途 (battlefield road)

Best verb pairs:

  • 烧成 (burned into) ↔ 埋没 (buried/covered)
  • 化作 (transformed into) ↔ 葬于 (buried in)

Best ending pairs (adjective/noun):

  • 焦土苦 (scorched earth, bitter) ↔ 乱冢残 (disheveled graves, broken)
  • 灰烬空 (ash and emptiness) ↔ 白骨寒 (white bones, cold)

Peace Wish (Lines 7-8)

Classical closing formulas:

  • 但愿戈矛皆入库 → 四海承平万古安 (I only wish all weapons stored → four seas peaceful, ten thousand ages safe)
  • 何时戈戟销兵去 → 天下苍生共太平 (When will weapons melt away → all under heaven share great peace)

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  1. Rhyme repetition: Don't reuse the same rhyme character (e.g., 寒 twice)
  2. Bad parallel: Don't pair 1-char word with 2-char compound at same position
  3. Rhyme on wrong line: Lines 3, 5, 7 must NOT end with -an rhyme group words
  4. Weak ending on non-rhyme lines: Avoid ending lines 3,5,7 with flat/neutral words; use vivid verbs or adjectives
  5. Disconnected narrative: Each couplet should build on the previous one
