Qi-Yan Lu-Shi (七言律诗) Guidelines
- Structure: 8 lines, 7 characters per line.
- Couplets: Lines 3-4 and 5-6 must form parallel couplets (antithetical in meaning and tone).
- Rhyme: The last characters of lines 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 must rhyme.
- Tonal Pattern (Modern Mandarin approximation):
- Ping (level tone): 1st and 2nd tones in modern Mandarin.
- Ze (deflected tone): 3rd and 4th tones in modern Mandarin.
- Standard pattern for a line: Ping Ping Ze Ze Ping Ping Ze (or variants).
- Theme: Must convey imagery, emotion, and philosophical reflection.
