Terraform 1.14

This overview applies when the project's target Terraform version is at least 1.14.

Querying existing infrastructure

List resources in .tfquery.hcl files describe provider-backed queries and filters over existing infrastructure.
terraform query executes list operations and can generate configuration for importing selected results.
terraform validate -query validates query files without contacting providers.
Providers can implement GenerateResourceConfiguration to produce more precise configuration for imported resources.

Actions

Provider-defined top-level action blocks model imperative operations outside ordinary resource CRUD, such as invoking a function or invalidating a cache.
Actions can be triggered from resource lifecycle configuration or directly through the -invoke CLI option. They represent explicit side effects and require provider support.

Testing and compatibility

Verbose Terraform test output includes expected diagnostics.
Test cleanup ignores prevent_destroy, allowing test-managed infrastructure to be removed after a run.
Terraform operations in container runtimes account for CPU bandwidth limits when selecting parallelism, so effective concurrency may be lower than on the host.
Terraform 1.14 requires macOS 12 or later.
