Terraform 1.12

This overview applies when the project's target Terraform version is at least 1.12.

Expressions

  • Logical && and || operators can short-circuit. An unevaluated operand cannot produce errors or side effects from functions.

Import and identity

  • An import block can identify a remote object with identity instead of id when the provider exposes a structured identity schema. The two arguments are mutually exclusive.
  • An import block's for_each expression cannot depend on the resource it imports.

Testing

  • terraform test -parallelism=n controls concurrent provider operations within a run's plan or apply.
  • Test run blocks can opt into parallel execution when their state dependencies allow it.
  • Failed assertions produce structured diagnostic objects for machine-readable output.
  • A missing expected failure no longer prevents subsequent test runs from executing.

Backends and compatibility

  • The OCI Object Storage backend is available for remote state.
  • Terraform 1.12 requires Linux kernel 3.2 or later.
