Release checklist
Cut and verify a software release: changelog, tag, publish, and proof it actually shipped. From its SKILL.md

One thing to look at
- 2 stars2 stars. Stars are a popularity signal and not a quality one, but at this level it is likely that nobody has read this closely except its author, and you would be relying on your own review.

release-checklist
A release isn't done when the command exits 0 — it's done when a fresh read of the registry/release page proves the artifact is live. This skill separates preparing, publishing, and verifying.
When to use
- Explicitly asked to
releaseorpublish. Tagging or pushing alone is not a release, and a release ask must be explicit — never publish as a side effect of other work.
Workflow
- Preflight. Clean tree on the release branch, CI green on the exact commit you'll tag, version bumped everywhere the project stores it (manifest, lockfile, docs). Changelog: move
Unreleasedto the new version with today's date, matching the house style. - Commit and tag. Conventional message (
chore(release): v1.2.3), annotated tag matching the project's tag format (checkgit tag -lfor precedent). - Publish through the project's official channel — the CI release workflow if one exists (prefer it: reproducible, credentialed correctly), manual commands only if that's the documented path.
- Verify with fresh reads, not exit codes:
- Registry: the new version resolves publicly (e.g.
npm view <pkg>@<ver>,pip index versions, crates.io page) with the expected dist-tag and publish time. - GitHub: tag exists on the remote, Release object exists, body carries the changelog for this version and links to artifacts.
- Install test where cheap: fetch the published artifact into a temp dir and smoke it.
- Registry: the new version resolves publicly (e.g.
- Close out. Start the next
Unreleasedchangelog section; commit. Report what shipped with links to the proof.
Pitfalls
- Verifying from cache or memory. Registries and CDNs lag; read the authoritative source and note the timestamp.
- Tagging a commit that CI never tested (last-second "tiny" edits between green run and tag).
- Changelog written from
git logalone — it describes commits, not user-visible change. Curate it. - Leaving the release half-done on failure. If publish fails mid-way, report exactly which steps completed; partial releases are worse than none when silent.
